Should you write your account number on the check when paying bills?  email this discussion to a friend?

Whenever I'm paying my electric bill or car insurance bill through the mail, I always try to remember to write my account number on the check. Partly, for the reason that I think they won't know which account to credit the money to otherwise.

However, I think there should be some other way for companies to identify their customers, like a home address, telephone number etc. What do you think? Isn't all that customer information contained on the bill anyway? Why do they need an account number?

If you sent a check for payment to a company and it didn't contain your account number do you think that they would be able to credit the money to the proper account?
What would you do if you sent off a check to pay a bill and forgot to write your account number on the check? Would you call the company and tell them what you had done?

The only bill that we don't pay online that we get every month is our water bill. I have been putting our account number on it, but I seriously doubt they would have a hard time figuring out who to credit it to anyway. Just to give you an idea about how small the town I live in is...my water/sewer/trash account number is 68! That's it. Our town is so small that when we first moved in, we went to the post office to get a thing to forward our mail. The lady asked us our names, and said "Oh I have some mail for you guys!" She just knew automatically as soon as she heard our names! Because she knows everyone in the town. And our name wasn't one she recognized.

So I don't think we would have any problems getting our water bill credited even if we forgot the account number. :)

Hi. Some things I pay for are by check, and yes I always put my account/reference number on the back of the check, to make things easier...

I always write the account number and name on the cheque on the left hand side at the bottom. All the envelopes have a note on the back saying to put your account number on the cheque. Maybe companies have misplaced cheques and its just another security check or whatever. I just do it to be safe and to make sure that the company knows to credit it to our account.

I always attach the remittance with my check in the envelope and mail it back- This way the company has something to match with the payment- I do also write down my account #- most bills state to do this- I’ll do anything that will make the companies apply the payment to the correct account- that way I don’t have to take the time later to fight with them- over if I made the payment or not.
