Is Barbie Changing?

I found a Barbie doll that I had when I was younger. I gave it to my girls to add to their collection. Today, my younest brought me my doll, and one of their clothing items to dress her in. I couldn't make it fit. It WAS a Mattel made dress, and it's new, never been washed (that I know of) so it couldn't have shrunk. Then I noticed the girl's new Barbies all have solid waists. Mine is jointed, so she can twist and turn. I thought this is kind of odd. So, when did Barbie change? Did Mattel change the body dimensions when I wasn't looking?

I would have to assume that Barbie has changed....consumer advocates would have found something they thought needed changing at some point. I have always looked upon consumer advocate groups as the parents that don't watch their children like they should so their offspring has hurt themselves playing with something, so they feel it is the companys fault and they can make the company pay for their lack of attention.

I feel the same way. I guess the part that surprises me is the bust on the old vs. new Barbie. I couldn't fasten the silly thing! Maybe it's Mattel's way of getting Barbie's measurments more natural or attainable? LOL!

HAHAHA!! This is great. I have no idea whatsoever when they changed Barbie. My daughters Barbie also had the poseable body with the waist jointed. So I may have to find this out. I lost my Barbies. HAHAHA!! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

HAHAHA! GI Joe? Right. I loved barbie as a little boy. Wasn't into "action figures". Too funny. I did have a Barbie actually. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Funny, I always thought you to be a GIJoe kind of guy. LOL! My Barbie dolls were always jointed, posable, etc. Sumofallfears said it best that it was probably some consumer advocate group that thought Barbie wasn't a good role model for children. Oh well. The girls still play with them anyway. :)

I was looking at some of the Barbies when I was in a store not too long ago, and I honestly think they've changed just about everything on them. They look "thicker" all over, not just at the waists. I don't like them so much anymore. But that's just me.

That's too bad. Unless maybe you can figure out the actual dimensions to use. But that sure seems like a lot of extra effort for such small items of clothing. Good luck hon.

That's just it. Their waists are thicker, and I think they are even shorter! Guess all those clothes that I've been making (using OLD patterns just aren't going to work.)

I didn't really investigate on the body parts of barbie, but I do think that their faces look different than before. *laughs* I was in Wal-Mart the other day and I was surprised to find that there is a top model barbie line, of course, the faces are all different from the "traditional barbie".

Thank you WIQ. :) Everything seems to be a little different on that poor doll.

I've always loved Barbie, but I gather that there have been at least 3 different sizes of Barbie dolls over the years since her introduction. My grandchildren always took the clothes off their dolls so I haven't tried making any clothes for Barbie, when they got older they seemed to lose interest in Barbie. But I am still interested in collecting clothes for my Barbie doll which must be some 45 years old as I received her as an 11th birthday gift.

Great thoughts GhostCat! I have had some success in finding doll patterns on ebay.. if you are interested. I haven't searched for a while, but there always seems to be something there. Enjoy your doll! I'm sure your grandkids will re-appreciate them, too, when they get older. :)

I will enjoy the doll. And if I can't find patterns on e-Bay or else where on the net, I'll have to finally try my hand at clothing design (which I might do anyway--it might actually be fun. When I was younger I was always very strongly discouraged from doing any clothing designing. There is no one around any longer to disapprove or make fun of me. So I can do pretty much what I want.
