Apple Tree, many apples, many birds, apples lose  email this discussion to a friend?

Wouldn't you know it? Last year, it was the worms that bore holes in our apples, so there was not that many of them left hole, most of them fell on the ground and we only had enough for four quarts of apple sauce, and four packages of sliced apples. This year, the birds took turns poking holes in the apples, every single one of them except for the ones I picked green. I swear the black birds and the robins had help. The could not have done it all by themselves.

Now, I am not a horticulturist or what ever the tree people are called, but I once heard that if you make a slurry of lime and water, (not the green stuff in a bar but the white mineral stuff) and spray it on your trees before they go into leaf, the worm problem either won't appear at all or it will be less severe.

Might be worth some checking since this is not going to harm anything environmentally. I am far from a greeny, but not everything they say and do is wrong either.

I was hoping that the dog next door would bark long enough to scare the birds away or that feral cat that is in our neighborhood would make the backyard his home, but I guess I am out of luck. Anyway those birds are a nuisance, picking holes in all the apples. I will check into that lime spray stuff though.

It seems to work. I have not sprayed the tree yet. My husband makes all the money, but it is being used here in the city. Anyway we had so much applesauce left from last year, that we only took enough to make a couple of pies.

I'm sorry to hear about your apple tree bird problem, suspenseful.

This reminds me of a time I had two great pecan trees in my yard. We had a lot of squirrels, and I was determined that I would get the bear's share of the pecans one year, instead of the squirrels.

For several days, I was very diligent in collecting the pecans into five gallon buckets. At the end of about a week, I had several five gallon buckets, and I was very proud of myself for finally out smarting the squirrels.

I put the buckets in the garage, and they sat there for some time until I could get back to them. You guessed it. When I returned to them, there was literally only a piece of a shell left. The squirrels had gotten their revenge!

At least you got a couple of green apples. :)

And people think squirrels are dumb.

Not only are they a lot smarter than we give them credit for, but they can be industrious too.

Sorry, but that made me laugh.

No wonder pecans are so expensive up here. It's those darn squirrels eating the pecans and deleting the supply. The trouble is we had two Apple trees and you know the one with the larger apples and closer to the house died. The apples on the remaining tree are only good for juice, you need tons of flour to make them good for pies.

I'm sorry to hear about your apple trees, suspenseful. It seems that you have gotten a lot of joy from them over the years, and I mourn their passing with you. :(

I wish that we had fruit trees around here that I could actually use. We have pecan trees, of course, and some crap apple trees, and about a 1/4 acre or more of plum trees. The wildlife loves these plum trees, and when the plums are really ripe, the noise of all the birds is spectacular. Fortunately, they are a good ways from the house.

I'm glad you got a good chuckle, freebc. Even though I was surprised and disgruntled at the time of my discovery of the great pecan heist, I couldn't help but chuckle at their ingenuity. They got the best of me. After all, I did all the work!!

Sorry your apples are ruined! I have no idea how to help but I guess the birds just like apples, maybe you should put out some kind of chime to scare them away!

I thought the feral cat around our neighborhood was doing a good job and so was the dog next door.
