Emergency Airline fares, sympathy fares

I've done some research this morning and found that in addition to bereavement fares there are also Emergency sympathy fares. I would just need to give the Hospital address, phone number and the doctor my mom has in intensive care. She arrived last night. I called one airline and waited forever to get through the voice system - these systems are long and drawn out, even more so as for some reason they don't recognize my voice even though I speak clearly and have little or no accent. When I finally go through I got a representive with really long pauses. I took a long time to find out their sympathy fare is the same price as normal discount fares. Rather than call every airline and go through this when I've been crying and for some reason feel really cranky, does anyone know of an airline that offers these fares and at a really good rate still? I know many airlines have stopped or narrowed down the program. I want to get out there and introduce my 9 month old grandson to his grandma (73) before I can take advantage of actually bereavement fares. When I first got pregnant, I bought vouchers on Ebay, people either rack up points and can 'give' these away - I think their called vouchers or they get a voucher for a late or cancelled flight. I was nervous about spending so much with a complete stranger but it worked out well and the couple were very nice and helpful. I even got to change to a closer connection at the last moment without any fee. Right now though, I can't really take the chance with someone I don't know - we will already be taking a loan out for this trip to Ohio and if we get some shyster we're out of luck and don't get to go. So I've thought of that angle. Anyway, does anyone know of an airline that provides really great sympathy fares - used to be that many airlines offered up to 50% off. I read some airlines don't offer this but if you explain your situation the reservation agent will work with you to find a decent fare.

Have your tried any of the online sites like PriceLine or Travelocity? Sometime you can get really good prices and if you're at all flexible as as far as days and times of travel or even the airports you fly out of and into you can make out really well. It's so annoying how long it takes to get to actually speak to a live person when you call the airlines! I know what you mean, it could take you forever to call each one. Have you tried a travel agency like AAA? I'm not sure if they could help you or not, but maybe they could. Good luck. and I'm sure your mother will be thrilled to meet her grandson! Annie

Actually, she's no longer in a life threatening situation. My husband took over, thank goodness. He wanted to anyway - he says there's no way our baby will be waiting around in an airport for hours! Since she's stable, the siblings all decided that my sister and myself go back for a visit when it will be more pleasant and she can really enjoy her grandson. My husband says if I really want to I can go anyway - he can't because he's taking of Thanksgiving. He does say we can go to his parents in Mississippi or Key West - (they have a house in MI but live on base in Key West) and then visit mom on the way back.
