Found a stray dog this morning.  |

|  Early this morning a dog wandered past the house dragging a huge log chain. It was only a medium-size dog, no reason for such a large chain! He looked very thin and dirty so I led him to my house and hooked him to my own dog's lead in the back yard. He had not tags and I don't remember seeing him before, but the roofer next door said he had seen him wandering around the last few days. I called the local police station and animal shelter and they had no reports of anyone looking for him. He is a very friendly dog but I have three already so keeping him is not an option. The animal shelter is going to pick him up later today and I feel bad about that, because it is not a no-kill shelter, but hopefully they will find his owner or a home for him. What bothers me is that he is wearing a choke collar and was dragging that heavy chain around, it must weigh 20 pounds. He didn't appear to be abused in any way, though.

| |  Oh what a sad story. We also have shelter here that is not a no-kill. That is what is so sad but it is totally understandable why you can't keep the dog. It sure does look like the person who owns the dog must know it is missing. Too bad you or the roofer didn't know of anyone who was able to get the dog and keep it. The poor dog must not have had a good home if it was a medium dog with such a heavy chain, guess the people had the dog but didn't really want it? At least you have given the dog an opportunity to have food, shelter and possibly a good home with love.
We do have some kind people around that have no-kill shelters but they are usually full with dogs and cats. As an owner of a cat and dog I say spay and neuter pets and give them love, if you can't keep them don't chain them up and forget about them, find a good home for them.
Thank you for what you have done for this dog.

| | I called the shelter back and told them we would keep him for a few days and try to find the owner or find him a home. My daughter-in-law says she knows someone who might take him if we don't find the owner. I'm not sure I want to find the owner. | | | |

| | That is great news to hear. Hopefully someone will take the dog so the poor thing can be "man's best friend" like it is supposed to be.
I will rest better now. I don't like shelter's at all that kill animals. It is different if the dog has mauled, hurt or killed someone. Just my opinion on that.

| |  No reason for such a large chain? Apparently even that wasn't enough to stop him. That sounds like a reason to me. That he was able to pull it lose while wearing a choke collar is incredible. Thats a tough dog.
I hope they find his home. I also hope the owner proves to be more responsable after this.

| | I don't know, he's been on a regular dog chain all morning and hasn't made any attempt to pull loose and escape. The log chain was pulled loose from where it was attached. Maybe he had some reason to escape from his home! | | | |

| |  That is so sad. I hope someone will adopt him. I used to live next door to a couple who kept their dog tied up 24 hours a day. He was afraid of thunder and lightning and would jump over the fence to our yard. I always feared he would choke himself so I would let him off the chain. He got off the chain a lot and roamed the neighborhood. I really did not like the way these people treated that dog. They never took him off the chain and never palyed with him. Sll they ever did was give him food and water. Why did they have him at all?

I gave the dog a bath a little bit ago and he was very well-behaved and didn't resist me at all. He does seem to be a very well socialized dog. My other dogs are curious and barked at him some but he did not react with any aggression. | | | |

| | I took him on a walk around the neighborhood yesterday and asked anybody who was outside if they recognized him, but nobody did. I called the local police and animal shelter and there were no reports of a missing dog, no lost animals in the newspaper ads. If they owners miss him they are not trying very hard to find him, so I guess I am not going to try to hard to find them either!
My daughter and granddaughter have taken a liking to the dog. I may end up owning four dogs after all! My daughter-in-law, Emily, offered to take her dog back, which we adopted, if we want to keep him (he's being called Peanut or Fred, depending on who's calling him!)
I brought him inside this morning because it is raining so hard, and he has been very well behaved. He doesn't seem to like men, though. He barked at my husband when he came home from work yesterday, and I have never seen a dog that didn't take to him right away! He also shied away from my dad this morning. He loves all us girls, though! | | | |
