How many pots and pans do you use to prepare dinner? email this discussion to a friend?

Most days I like to cook simple one pot dishes, like tacos and sloppy joes. With those recipes, you can brown the beef and then drain it, before adding the remaining ingredients to the same pan. Just works out better that way with my limited schedule.

But, sometimes I'll make things complicated for myself and try cooking a specialty recipe. And, then I will end up with four or five pots and pans and assorted bowls to wash at the end of the night. It turns into a real mess. So, I try to keep things simple and confine my cooking to just one pot.

Do you prefer to prepare elaborate dinners that use multiple pots and pans? Or, do you go for one-pot dinners that require less clean up?

Let me put it this way: as few as I can get away with lol. That is why pot roast in a dutch oven is my very favorite dish! One day I made enchiladas and I ended up with what seemed like a hundred pots and pans, lol. And a baking dish!

I know there could not have been a hundred, but you know. ..as you clean up it seems like that many!

Hi there. Depending on what Im cooking for dinner, I can use up too four pots and a roasting dish at the same time, maybe more and sometimes less... If Im cooking a simple dish I will probably use 1 pot and 1 pan...

Anywhere from 1 to 3 pots, pans or skillets. A lot of it I try to keep to a minimum and I have found several shortcuts that can help me reduce clean up. If not, I've got a heavy duty dishwasher and potscrubber I can just deploy! The most pots I've used is 5 and that was when I cooked something major. I mentioned it in another "what is the biggest meal you've made" thread.

It depends on how much time I have, and whether or not my husband is home.

I do like to do things like sloppy joes sometimes, but I still have to use another pan for a veggie most times.

Usually even if I cook a simple one dish meal, I end up making some kind of side dish. Sometimes I cook something in the crock pot and don't have a side, but rarely. Even then, usually I fix garlic bread or rolls or something.

Usually at least once a week, I go all out and make a huge dinner. One day last week I made pork chops, baked potatoes, fried mushrooms, garlic cheesy bread, and green beans. They were all fixed in their own pans, so I did have quite a mess to clean up.

I'm a basic cook and usually only use one pot or two if I need to make cook veges or potatoes to go with the main meal. I only own 3 pots anyways!

i usually prefer to go for simple dish as i don't want to end up with many dishes to wash... both me and my hubby are busy people and we work everyday... so we are very tired already by the time we reach home... i usually end up with the most 3 pots and pans... but i cook the dishes for 2 or 3 days courses...:-)

I try to cook with as few pots and pans as possible. I used to cook elaborately before I had children and therefore had more time on my hands to even have the energy to want to go back into the kitchen after dinner and tidy. Now I try to cook healthily, quickly and leave no mess! So I wash up as I work and then I stack the dishwasher directly after I serve the dinner... so any leftovers have to be put straight into the fridge and all the pots and pans and cooking utensils go straight into the top drawer of the dishwasher.

My favourite meals to cook and use less pots and pans:

Using the crock-pot/slow-cooker (is that cheating?)
Making spaghetti bolognaise - 2 pots
Soup - one pot
Steak & vegies - frying pan and one pot - I cook more than one vegie at once - so I put the brocolli in first and cook for 3 mins and then add the snowpeas for 1 minute before I drain both.

Tonight I cooked two dinners at once - one for the kids and one for the adults.... usually I cook the kids dinner at 4:30pm and the adults at 7pm, the kids have their desert while we eat our dinner and then its bed time. So I did a bit of juggling.... I cooked chippolatas (baby sausages) in the frying pan while boiling pasta in a pot, when the sausages were nearly ready I used my pasta drainer to steam some carrots on top of the pot of boiling pasta, I served the carrots and the strained pasta and the sausages and then put the steak on to cook. I then poured boiling water from the kettle into the empty pot (that I had previously used for the pasta and carrot steaming) and brought it to the bubbling boil, I threw in two corn on the cobs and turned over the steaks, I ran around and stuffed any things I had used to prepare food into the dishwasher. I then threw in a couple of handfuls of snowpeas and let them blanche for a moment before serving all the vegies and the steak for the adults. I then rinsed the fry pan and the pot and pushed them into the dishwasher and turned it on. I brought out the plates of food to everyone and I quickly wiped over the benches, so then I could sit down and enjoy my meal and not have to worry about cleaning up afterwards because it is hubby and kids who stack the dinner plates into the other drawer of the dishwasher and turn that on.

Hrmm so to shorten my long winded answer to your question.... I try to only use two at the most!

It just depends. If my husband has the night off from work I cook more elaborate meals that use more pans. If it is just me and our daughter home I'll go simple and make something like hamburger helper. Or I'll bake chicken nuggets and french fries.I really hate doing dishes.
