Toy Recalls - The Bright Side email this discussion to a friend?

I must give the credit for my inspiration for this discussion to my friend Cyntrow who told of her own optimism in one of her discussions. This is one we can easily tie to the "If life hands you lemons make lemonade" or however it goes exactly...lol

There have been several different toy recalls in recent weeks, I'm not even sure how many now but it involves millions of toys. This couldn't come at a worse time for many parents with the holidays right around the corner and some people probably already well into their shopping. Added to that is the problem parents have if they discover their child already has one or more toys that have been recalled...scary indeed and not an easy task to "sneak" a favorite toy away from a toddler. It all got me to thinking about how times have changed since I was a child. I wsn't a deprived kid by any means but I sure didn't have one percent of the toys kids today have and I think I had a great childhood! I was able to amuse myself with very little to "play with". My brother, who is 14 years older than me had even fewer toys than I did and I'm sure my parents had practically none! The point is every generation has brought more and more gadgets that every child HAS to have and the marketing to children gets more agressive all the time. Now, with the knowledge some of these toys are not only over-priced and take up space you don't have to spare in your home, they're actually quite dangerous to you child's safety and health, maybe it would be a good time for us to take a step back and see if we can't return a little bit to the good old days when kids could find something to do without a warehouse full of toys. Let them use their creativity - you'd be surprised what kids can come up with to pass the time if they're left to their own resources. I used to spend hours cutting pictures out of old magazines and pasting them on construction paper to make scrapbooks. I also started writing short stories when I was very young and my love of writing remains to this day. We used to play "school" and we didn't need any toys for that except may be chalkboard. Then there's that old standby for the young future entrepreneur...have a lemonade stand! The toys from China are all "lemons" but the kids can still make - and sell - lemonade!

That is a great idea. I know my house looks like a toyrus (mostly because the grandparents do not know how to say no). I have just started my holiday shopping. This year we are not buying any toys made in chine. My oldest is really into arts and crafts so I am going to focus on that for him ( he is such a creative little guy, I have the walls to prove it). My youngest will just be a little over a year. So she is going to be a little more difficult. Her 1st birthday is in November and I still have not figured out what I am going to get her. Got any ideas?

Hey, that's what us grandparents do! Focusing onthe arts and crafts is a great idea. My granddaughter has been like that too since she was tiny (she's 10 now). It's hard to choose for someone your daughter's age, but then again when they're that young is doesn't take alot of fancy, expensive toys to make them thrilled. It's when they get old enough to watch all the TV commercials and say "Mommy, I want that" that the fun starts. My daughter and my grandkids and nieces and nephews always seemed to enjoy building blocks and things like that, if you can find some that are made in the U.S. and not painted with lead. I can't get over the fact they were making kids toys with such toxic and dangerous materials...un-freakin-believable! My grandkids now are into music, movies and some video games so as long as we make sure they're age appropriate at least there's nothing that can harm them...lol Of course some of today's music isn't fit for anyone of any age, but I guess I'm just showing MY age. Keep me posted what you end up getting for your little ones and how they like them!

ah,your one of those kind of grandma's too! My mom is such a pushover!!!

I know what you mean about the toys. My mom has even stopped buying toys for them from china. It breaks her heart to say no. She is having a hard time with birthdays and Christmas too. My nephew is easy. He is 16. My niece is harder. She is 2. Both of mine are little. So all of us are at a lose at to what to do.
I am going to try and look around and see if I can find some online stores with toys made in the USA and see what I find. I will keep you posted.

I also grew up in an era when kids didn't have many toys and didn't in the least feel deprived.
My children got more toys every christmas than I got in my life and I would do it again.
They had/have great imagination and used their toys as tools in the games they invented.
My grandson is much the same way.
They had their crafts things also and used them alot. Susan
