Okay as some of you know I have a lot going on in my life, between the mundane fine-tooth "fall cleaning" project that I'm doing, plus working on grants, plus just normal "life"--LOL. A few week ago, I did finished and mailed off my grant application to the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship on September 4th, but I had two others to do, and are both due October 3rd. Well, I just got another one done, the New York Foundation of the Arts and was able to work, complete and submit it on-line just a few moments ago...yea!!!!!!!! Two down, one to go.
The REAL big news though, is that I won the red-tape bull-crap I was going through about that tax refund check that while it was a refund for my mother, now deceased, (last August 2006), but as sole survivor and personal representative I was entitled to. You can see my original discussion about this here:
http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1248224.aspx
It seems my bank was being a real pain in the "A" The tax refund check was issued with my name on the first line of Pay To, but on the second line, it had "The Estate Of...(my mother's name" Because of this, twice I went to my bank hoping to simply deposit it...nope...they were telling me that because of the addition of my mother's name, I would have to go to Surrogate's Court, and get, fill, and file for Letters of Administration. I had even called IRS, to see about a re-issue of the check solely and only in my name but due to "rules" they couldn't as they needed to track who the original receiver of the tax refund was. So here I had this nice large refund check just collecting dust and not doing me shat. I couldn't do a damn thing with it, and getting the Letters of Administration would have been a hardship for me to do.
So then I got it into my head to call that representative at my Congressman's office again, who was so helpful to me when I was going through my SSI benefits disaster...if you remember my benefits were completely cut off. Well, even though I figured that the representative couldn't help me directly as she only deals with SSI issues, I figured that maybe she could lead me to someone who could, and yes, she did. She directed me to a Tax Advocate that works with the IRS, a really fantastic woman...She couldn't understand the bull I was going through either, and even she said I DIDN'T need Letters of Administration...As long as the first line name was MINE, I shouldn't have a problem, and just deposit the money. So, what she did, was send a letter to me explaining in clear language the situation, and so forth so even a two year old could understand it.
So yesterday, Monday, I went to my bank, and I was able to get the manager of my bank to discuss the issue. At first, it was a no go even with the letter with me...she was telling me the same shat as before.
As you can imagine I felt like exploding with steam coming out of my ears as by now, this being the third attempt to put that check into my account, but instead of being hostile I stood my ground and explained the whole issue in a nice CALM manner. So then she calls the bank's legal department, she yaks awhile, and the other person on the other end of the phone asks the manager to fax the letter and the check to her. So the manager leaves the office to fax everything, and then I waited, and waited, and waited while this is all going on. She comes back and resumes the conversation with the legal department...Next thing you know...BINGO...She says it's all right to deposit the check--Yippeeee
And today when I checked my balance...there was the money in it...uh, the bad news...I can't exactly go beserk or whoopty-do with the money....this money is going to pay off those pesky credit card bills in full or at least three of them in full--but WHAT A RELIEF--I'll be debt free now!!
So just wanted to share this good news!! :) :)
Doing happy dances here heheee

That is awesome! You go girl! LMBO! You sure did have a hard enough time getting it through but now it's done and you're free of debt!! What an accomplicment! Hubby and I are working on ours. Whew! What a pickle we're in but we'll get through it. Just have to wait another (hopefully) two more weeks before his money comes in and we'll be able to do the same thing except it's lower what we owe and we'll get the rest paid in no time. He retired and is owed a bunch of back pay and it's due in in two weeks (supposidly, we'll see).

Congrats!
You have been struggling with this for SO long! I'm glad that you finally got it taken care of! And paying off debt is always great!
It's wonderful that you kept your cool in the bank this last time too! I don't know if I could have done it with all that I went through and all the hoops I had to jump :)

I think you did a wonderful job and probably I would have kept my cool for the most part. Wouldn't want to make a butt of myself in public.
Yes and no on the ignoring part. Working at WM for so long I really got to see it all. And the sad part is that the ones who through a fit, yelled, cursed, ect got exactly what they wanted and usually then some. The ones who were all calm, collected, and understanding got nothing. And those are the people you want to help the most. It sucks that it's like that at WM because it just encourages more instances like this.

Well I think there's a difference in being calm about such a situation, but "inactive"--the trick is to deal with things calmly, but assertively....so in a way, have a demanding stance, but in a "nice" way--hehe

Oh believe me, I wanted to punch the manager in the nose! LOL...But getting hostile would have probably lost my chances instead of helping in getting that check business resolved...Ever notice when people are yelling at someone, how the other person tends to ignore them?

More good news, I worked and completed the third grant as well, and I was able to submit it on-line so all the hard work is behind me. Yes, the bank should have accepted that check a long time ago--what pains in the "a"--LOL

Congratz dear Pyewacket with the great news!
Once again a proof of the fact that with honey one is catching more flies than with vinegar - that you kept calm while speaking with the manager and finally you got the check on your account! Besides, what you did with it is TOP, nothing better than being debtless, so congratz very much weith that too :) (((HUGZ))) to you and have a splendid week ahead with other great news!

Oh how I wish though that I could just go bananas with the money...there are some things I could really use, but I rather pay off those pesky credit cards, cut them in half and say au revoir :)

Sure dear friend, and I wish you to succeed with it and stay away from the credit cards from here on. Personally - no such luck, as every time we pay the debts off, the next one starts ...and this because I always seem to need more than we currently make, and the CC are so easy :/
So while knowing how expensive their monthly percentage actually is - we, and particularly ME always falls again for it - but do remain positive that one day - yeah, one day I wont need it any more :)

I gonna say the truth here as I did always.I came twice to your discussion until I can add a response here.I don't like to read only few lines from any discussion and just I add a response.I like read and understand all,so with my poor English and with your long write discussion took little more time for me.
Anyway I'm glad that you deposit at least the check. Now I'm sure you gonna think twice before you add your mother name again lol:About the dancing I love dancing so count me too...

Sounds like you did really great. It also sounds like that bank manger does not know the difference between a hole and a rock.
Does the happy dance look similar to the peepee dance? I was just wondering. LOL
I bet is feels great to be debt free for once. I hope it last for a long time.

YIPPEE!! YAHOO!! HALLELUJAH!!! I am doing the haappy dance with you, see the kitty food scattering across the floor? And though I was away I assumed you had killed the SSI dragon since you are still online and seemingly still housed, congratulations on that too. So celebrate today, shine up your armor and sword, oh great Pyewacket, Killer of Government Draagons and Cutter of Red Tape. I will also be watching for your cd on getting grants, coming soon. and now you have a new sidelien, advisor to other people caught in the red tape morass, just be sure to charge accordingly, those guys make a LOT of $$$ LOL. I am thrilled for you my friend. So now I shall try the return button AGAIN and see if myLot eats this reply also lol.
