A.D.D. drugs are they good/bad for the child?

I have a friend who's child has ADD and she refuses to put them on any of the drugs for fear of the side-effects. She fears the child will become worse. I think medication has changed over the years since Ritalin and that they don't over medicate children like they used to(this is speculation). Does anyone have a child with ADD and are you medicating or not? Has anyone tried a holistic approach and how has that worked? My friends daughter is such a sweet kid but does have problems at school and home that I worry for her as she gets older. I would like to see her get help but not sure what to suggest.
