You're Privacy May Be In Jeopardy Because Of Google  

We have had a private unlisted number for many many years. But your right, if you just know a persons real name first and last and google them you will find exactly where they live. But now its been like that for as long as there has been a google.

I did a search on my phone # and it came back with no matches
I guess because my phone # is unlisted?
I dont know.
It is a little creepy to think what someone could find out about you on-line
OK so its more than just a little creepy
Its REALLY creepy!

What's even weirder pw is I just read an article online about "have you googled yourself lately" talking about all the info that's on google if you just do a search on your name & how ppl have lost their jobs over it & perspective employers do that to see if you have any "dirt" online or any other resumes to see if you've lied about your credentials.

Yes I know privacy is getting to be a major issue with google directions/map. At least I don't worry as much since I'm not listed.

That has nothing to do with Google, though. Google is a search engine, meaning it searches OTHER sites. If there was no Google, that information could still be found using any other search engine or by doing the foot work yourself. Even without the internet, that would still be possible. If you know a person's phone number, you could look it up in the phone book. If the phone book has an address listed, you could buy a map and find the house. Is this all creepy? Yes, but you're blaming the wrong culprit here. Our privacy is always in jeopardy in a variety of ways. It's just something you have to live with. Take the necessary precautions and live your life.

Gee Pyewacket, thanks a lot for bringing this to our attention here :( and you so right about the risks all of us have with the private infos displayed online. After all - it wasn't us requesting it, and according to me this should never have happened to begin with. Organisations and busin esses should be more aware of the risks we all are having due to having our private infos displayed online without our concense. hmmm, this is bad, very bad indeed :(

this is good information to know. Just how do you remove your info from Google and the white pages. I have never seen any way to delete them.

Ok I googled my Phone number & here is what happened. My name came up like it is listed in the local phone book. With my first & middle intial plus my last name. It had the correct street address. However it had the wrong Zipcode. when I clicked on the link for the map it showed the street that I live on. However the surrounding streets were not the street that are actually in the are in which I live. Evidently the stree I live on is a long street & goes through at least two zipcodes. You're right it is creepy!

Pye, I don't see where someone having a phone number makes a difference.
I don't know your number so how could I be locating you.
There are millions of phone numbers in the white pages w/ addresses but how does that effect your privacy?
