Topps Meat Factory Closes After All Those Recalled Patties

I heard this on the news today. As you know not long ago, there was yet another recall of the Topps brand frozen meat patties. During the early summer, they had a previous recall of their frozen patties, but this second one only a few days ago, was much more extensive. Now it seems that the company is closing after 67 years in the business. It wasn't just a case of these hamburger patties being sold in supermarkets, but they are the suppliers of their patties in schools, hospitals, and restaurants. Also, even though the recall was relatively recent, it was inferred that the Topps company KNEW about the contamination long before the recalls...Gee does that sound right to you?? Here's the article http://www.cbc.ca/cp/business/071005/b100576A.html What's your feelings about this? Despite all the recalls, do you think it's right they should go out of business completely, or are you glad? I just feel sorry for the workers there that are now out of a job.

That is horrific in the truest sense! They KNEW about it! AND they're product was going to schools and hospitals!! I would expect them to be sued if anyone gets sick from eating their hamburgers! I certainly would - but only because they actually knew about the contamination and did nothing about it at first.

That really sucks. I hadn't known (or I don't remember hearing) that Iams knew about it. They should have realized that animals are smaller therefore affect them at a faster rate. AND they can't exactly tell us when they feel bad. We can just guess.

If it were true that they knew before hand then I'd say yes it's a good thing that they were shut down but I do feel for the lower end employees though because it wasn't their fault but meerly doing their job. That part is so sad. However if they didn't know about the contamination before hand then no I don't think they should be shut down because it's human error and to be human is to make errors. That's why there's erasers on pencils for we do make mistakes. Just wish it were that easy to just erase it.

What annoys me is that they had the nerve to conduct "business" as usual knowing the meat was contaminated...does that make sense to you? Iams did the same thing...they knew the pet food was contaminated also months before that massive recall of pet foods that killed dogs and cats.

I hope they both get their socks sued off. Something needs to be done to show that this is a complete no no so it'll be shown to others to not to even try doing that.

67 years along time to be there and then to get shot down like that. and I sure feel sorry for the workers they might have worked there all htier lives and thats al they know to do . Seems very unfair and to you think after the first recall they did nt do any thing about it? dont sound right sounds to me like some one wanted to put them out of business

I hope at least the workers got some kind of compensation as they are now out of work--it may not be easy for them to find work right away

I certainly feel sorry for the employees, but they can always find new jobs. On the other hand, people that eat the contaminated meat and die can't go and get a new life. So it's only right they close those plants if they knowingly put bad product on the market. Funny thing is, I never bought Topps hamburgers before but almost did a few weeks ago but had a weird feeling about it and decided not to and opted for veggie burgers instead.

I had a strange feeling too some time ago...my two cats are spoiled rotten..LOL..I usually get them Fancy Feast, but one time I was in the store and thought, heck let me treat them to Iams instead...I changed my mind though...a few weeks later that's when they had the pet food recall, and guess which cat food was one of them..yep...Iams

I don't know really. I mean if they were in business for 67 years then they obviously knew what they were doing. Lately it seems that everything is being recalled for one reason or another. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

There really do seem to be too many recalls in food and with companies that have been around a long, long time too--something just isn't right here

Boy, I am so glad that I've never bought the premade hamburger patties, pyewacket! I tell you, the situation pertaining to food safety is becoming worse all the time. It seems that we are at the mercy of all the people in these different industries whom we depend upon for most of our basic needs. Something is definitely wrong with this picture!

I've only tasted those kind of burgers once or twice and never did care for them. I hate to think of people though that do rely on them. Too bad they don't close down those places that had the tainted and contaminated pet foods...cause now we're talking about deaths of innocent animals

I was afraid that would happen. I figured there would be so many lawsuits that they would go under anyway. There is so many ways that food can get contaminated. It is just sad that it did happen. There are so many recalls right now, it is just scary.

Jee Pye, how could they do it if they KNEW beforehand that stuff was contaminated? I hope these people will go to jail for it, and it was the only right decision to close the factory. My oh my, imagine the risk for people in hospitals, and schools :( TheFortunes

I'm so glad I didn't buy any of their stuff. I'm a bit sad people lost jobs, but seriously too many recalls are going on and its very dangerous to expose people to this kind of thing! Stateside, what in the world is going on with safety, inspections and checking? Seems like things slipped back to the 1900s-1920s pre-FDA standards for some companies.
