How safe is it for your computer to do click for pays?

I was wondering how safe it is to do the click for pays and to read the e-mails. Do they download spyware, adware, viruses or other yucky things. I use my computer for a lot of serious things and don't want to take a chance of it crashing or information taken from it because I clicked on something.
I am hoping you experienced people can give me some information on this subject.

better have an updated anti virus, anti spyware/malware program. you'll be getting lots of tracking cookies that may slow down your computer if you don't scan and clean it from time to time.

I have tried Hits for Pay and so far I have not have any problems
