Spammers and chain letters.

I keep hearing a pymarid scheme where they put there is a list of names/e-mails where you pay the first list and then put your name/e-mail on the bottom list. How does that work? I know its no good but I wonder what they get out of it if somebody were to do what they say in the chain letter/e-mail. Couldn't they just not pay and put their name on top of the list and still get paid if it were to work? Me I don't fall for silly tricks like that. Why? Because no one will pay me for sending out a chain letter/e-mail and it is just annoying. Tell me what you think about it.
