The Ad-Aware program you have tried is not an antivirus program, it's an antispyware program. Having one of those is important too. I think the free Spybot program is better than Ad-Aware, though.
I recommend you install it and in the advanced settings choose to let Spybot scan for spyware whenever Windows starts (use the 3 minutes delay option). Also, choose the autoupdate option.

| 8. suchand (86) | 3 years ago |  For free antivirus solutions, you can try three solutions, Antivir, AVG free or avast home edition. I prefer antivir of these three, and have been using it for 2-3 years now on my laptop, and it have been a life saver for a couple of times.
You will need to get a good free firewall as well as an antispyware suite. If you have a genuine windows, you can download windows defender, which is good at blocking spywares offering real time protection. If not, get adaware personal/ spybot SD, or avg free antispyware . Just google for all these softwares.
