I have been using free Avast anti-virus for home edition which is really good and decent free antivirus to protect your pc.

To get powerful antivirus, you need to buy it. If you download for free, free adsware and spyware will come to you pc too...

a built-in firewall for antivirus you can
use avast or clamwin these are free as far as I know
for spyware I recommend spybot (search and destroy)

The Ad-Aware program you have tried is not an antivirus program, it's an antispyware program. Having one of those is important too. I think the free Spybot program is better than Ad-Aware, though.

I recommend you install it and in the advanced settings choose to let Spybot scan for spyware whenever Windows starts (use the 3 minutes delay option). Also, choose the autoupdate option.
