I have always heard that Las Vegas is a beautiful city with a seamy underbelly. I was just wondering if I would live in such a place. I don't think so. I guess it would be great for someone who likes the night life, the casinos, and 'round-the-clock partying. I know that some people who live there have regular jobs and lead normal lives. I have a friend whose sister moved her family out there many years ago. It is supposed to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. because so many are flocking there for the lifestyle. Would you like to live in such a city?

I don't know that I would choose to live there, although UNLV has a great paleontology department which is one of the things I study. I think if my husband needed to move there for a job that I wouldn't mind living there, its just not somewhere I would pick.

Yes, Aurone, the university there is very popular. It is highly rated when it comes to sports. I still would not want to live there.

Hello! Las Vegas is a beautiful city indeed but I don't think I would prefer living there. Vacation or visiting there would be a great idea especially if you have lots of money, just imagine all those casinos, bars ..ohhh it's like they're all calling your names and seducing you to spend your money...If you go to Las Vegas..it's all about money...money...money...*hehe* Take care. *smile* ciao! c",)

Well, fab, I would be like a fish out of water in Vegas, lol. My idea of a fun evening is cuddling up with a good book or a good movie.

I am much like you, in that I have the wild partying image of Vegas, and I cannot feature myself fitting in. It is not even on my list of places I would like to visit. I do know that lots of people love it, both as a destination and as a home, and I am sure there are "normal" people and "regular" lifestyles there.

Yes, GG, Vegas has its share of "normal" people living there. I've heard that there are even slum areas.

I had a friend that was in the air-force years ago in Las Vegas. He would call and tell me about all the casinos he would go to. It sounded like a lot of fun. I would be to scared of spending my money though if I went. Then again I bet on dog races and I stopped one I lost twice. So I know when to quit.I think I just want to see what it is like to play on a slot machine because in Florida it is illegal

Who knew, Shaun? I thought Florida had some of everything, lol. You are right though, the temptation factor would be so high in Vegas.

I'm totally turned off by such glitz...LOL...a place like Las Vegas would have no appeal to me...Not that it's like that, but so many years ago I went to Miami Beach area of Florida, and I found it BORING...unless you were into the disco scene there was nothing to do there...Me---give me nice quiet countrysides, and if I were to stay someplace, it be a quaint bed and breakfast. Also, so many years ago, my mom and I went often to DisneyWorld ....a few times we stayed at the enormous Contemporary Resort...hated it...but then we would stay at the Polynesian Village which made one feel I was on an exotic isle of the Hawaiian area--- nope....I just am not a fan for any kind of glitz...it just seems so cheap and cheesy...lol..so definitely not...I wouldn't be attracted to move to such a place or live the Las Vegas lifestyle--guess I have simple values

The point you mentioned about values is the key, pyewacket. I think that the appeal of Vegas centers around money and showgirls, etc., and that is not what the average person(such as myself) would find appealing. It is a fast lifestyle as are some other cities I have heard of.

I think it is not a good place to live because the social environment I do not like. The city is big and I am afraid of safety.

No, I don't think I would. I like the quieter life. I don't care for the night life. It would be too much for me.

I don't get the rush that gambling brings so I wouldn't want to live there or even visit.I guess it would be fun for others, but not for me.

I've been there once for a 3 day vacation and we did have fun while we were there. It's not somewhere I'd like to live though. It's my understanding that it's a very expensive place to live, even if you don't frequent the casinos. According to my hubby, he would make at least double what he makes here in Texas, but since he likes the casinos, I don't think we would be ahead by much in the end, lol. :)

It would be a fun place to visit, paidreader, but I get the impression that most people wouldn't want to live there. Considering the main industry there, it is no surprise that the cost of living would be off the charts.

I surely wouldn't want to live there, not sure I'd even want to visit. I used to want to go to see a Star Trek convention, but I just have a bad vibe about the place. I'm not into that lifestyle and there's are too much of the wild crowd for my taste. Of course, I'm judging it without ever having been there. So if an opportunity ever came up, I might be willing to go check it out.

Well, ChaJud, considering the amount of publicity the place receives, I don't think anyone could really get a wrong impression of Vegas. It would appeal to the taste of some while it wouldn't others.

Nope....natta...absolutely no way! The pace, the hustle, bustle is something we moved away from a number of years ago from our home town with a population of over 750,000 people to a rural community with under 100 residents. So there is absolutely no appeal in living any large center...and especially not one growing the way Vegas is. Cheers, Raia

You're absolutely right, perspectives, Vegas is no place for the settled, homespun type.

If I wasn't married and did not have a child I think I would enjoy living and working in such a fast paced city, but with a family I don't think that would be an appropriate environment! I have wanted to visit (with my husband) and see the shows, but only as a vacation not permanent!

Oh, I don't know about that, brookehaun. We are more adaptable than we often think, and if necessary, it wouldn't be so hard to raise a family there.

Hi Worldwise, We just moved FROM Las Vegas to the Northwest. Most who live in Vegas have regular jobs and the housing is booming. It's very expensive now to buy home, or stay at one of the hotels or see a show. It is not a good place to raise your family if you don't have to. Too many billboards etc touting a lifestyle most would rather their children not try. Clark County has one of the worst school districts in the nation and one of the highest crime areas. It was reported shortly before we left. It also ranked close to last for prenatal and hospital care. Most jobs pay just above minimum wage, and they have the worst traffic in the nation outside of Los Angles, also reported right before we left this past July. I don't think people are flocking to Las Vegas for the lifestyle necessarily, but rather for the work. It has one of the lowest unemployment stats in the nation....at least that's ONE positive for Sin City. lol

Thanks for the stats, caroliewrites. I have heard how the housing market is booming there. I don't feel that it would be a suitable place to raise a family for the simple fact that it is Sin City, lol.

I have family that lives in Las Vegas and they love it. You may find it weird to hear, but they actually never go to the casino's except when someone comes in town. Las Vegas is just like any other city. There are the good area's, the scary areas, and the tourists spots. most of the people that you meet in the casino's are not actually from Vegas. Its a great place, i actually considered moving out there until they told me that it can get to 120* in the summer. I dont think I could deal with that kind of heat.

Hi worldwise, I have vacationed in Las Vegas, twice. It is a fun city, with the sights and casinos. Lots of the casinos have public shows for tourists. There are lots of things to do besides going to the casino. I spent one week on the Strip the first time, and it was fun. Everything is huge!! The second time I spent a couple of days in the old section of Vegas, downtown. That was very interesting, especially on Fremont street. The bottom line, Las Vegas is a good place to visit, but I don't want to live there. I am going down again in March 2008. I do enjoy visiting someplace new everytime I visit. Happy posting..

I can't imagine living there, but one of my family's good friends moved there after retirement and love it (but they were quite well off, and I'd assume not addicted to casino's). The only memory I have is from childhood when we went on a fun driving vacation, going through there. It had been a childhood wish to go to Las Vegas and do slot machines. I was jumping up and down (I see we were all a bit naive), because happily trotting into the casino, the guards held me back, and said "Children/underage must stand 10 feet away." I was so...devastated. Ha ha. But anyway, I would only dare do the slot machines anyway. I don't think I'd want to live there.

No, if you live there you won't value it anymore. I go there every year and I love to look at the city lights as we drive.

That begs the question, animegirl, Why would anyone wish to live somewhere they did not value?
