Are You Game To Pick Up Frogs From Your BackYard. |
I have always been fascinated by frogs. Have learnt the best ways to handle them etc and how to help create a new habitat. When they come into my backyard, yeah, I pick them up and have a good look at them. I show my kids too, and tell them and show them how to handle them. When they are a little bit older, I will go into more detail about frogs and teach them about how to protect these beautiful creatures. So, are you curious when it comes to our amphibous friends? Do you pick them up and have a look? Or are you the kind of person who admires from afar? Don't get me wrong, I always put them back where i found them, so that they can keep going with their little lives.

1. ElicBxn (7422) | 10 months ago | Well, I seldom see frogs in my yard, the dogs probably kill any I might have. I do have toads, the dogs pretty much leave them along, except to bark at them if they get in the water dish. (LOL) Pretty much the only time I handle any animal except for the pets it to take them away from the pets... Dead rats, mice, whatever... my cats or dogs don't need those things.....

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | LOL. We don't have cats or dogs. but I'm surprised that we are getting frogs at all with the whopping lizard that has taken up residence in our back yard.

ElicBxn (7422) | 10 months ago | We'd kind of need a more permanent water source in Texas to get frogs around here, and I don't have it. The toads are much more tollerant of the dry.

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | Proving a water source is as simple as having a big bowl of water, up off the ground that you top up regularly and clean when too slimey! lol. Putting some plants around it will help to provide places for them to hide.

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | LOL. Yeah, I'm that way with some things too. When it comes to animals though, I am very curious and pick up just about anything! And I've been bitten for my efforts, but that's my fault not theirs!

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | LOL. Now that's what I call a wake up call! I've always chased and played with frogs, they are pretty harmless and very cute! lol. Going to get my license to own and breed them soon.

Goodie123 (6885) | 10 months ago | Good on you. Do you have any particular ones you want to breed. Are you going to breed any of the ones that medicine for stomach ulcers is being made from.
| |
newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | I want the big fat, green tree frogs we have here! lol. They are so cute and a little harder to find! I will be breeding with the intent to let them go in nearby water ways and maybe some for sale too, but only if I do a thorough check of who is buying them first.
| |
Goodie123 (6885) | 10 months ago | Oooowwwww well you will not have to check me out LOL, because I will not be buying any. And besides if I did buy any my chooks would eat them.I never knew chooks liked frogs but mine do.

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | LOL. Chickens will eat anything they can get their beaks on!

4. suspenseful (11842) | 10 months ago | The frogs in our backyard are too fast for anyone to pick up, and I do think they might be toads. I am not that fascinated with frogs, well because I took science and we had to dissect them. (No if someone offered my frog legs, I would still eat them. I guess I am the squeamish type.) I have never picked up a live frog, I guess it is because they would jump out of my hands. I think they should be left alone. Oh and I do like Kermit.

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | LOL. I know what you mean. I just seem to have the knack of sitting in the wrong spot when they go hopping by and ended up with them in my lap. i am always very careful when I handle them and make sure they go right back where I found them. With so many endangered species of frogs here, I'm trying to educate my children on how to hold and look after them. They think it is quite neat. If I manage to get a breeding permit, then I will be releasing the majority into the wild to help restock the wild populations.

5. xboxboy (1360) | 10 months ago | we have a pond with newts and toads and frogs. me and my little sister (who is 6) handle them and (gross time!) we feed slugs to the hedgehogs and what a noise they make when they bite in!

| |
newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | Now that is cruel! lol. I'd at least put salt on the slugs first! lol. I like teaching my kids about our local wildlife, but it seems the wildlife is just as interested in them! Screams all round! lol.

6. secretbear (4545) | 10 months ago | ew! LOL frogs are one of the animals i find disgusting.>. < i'm sorry if i differ with your interest.^__^;; there was a time in my life though when i had to hold a frog, catch them, kill them and dissect them.^__^ i had a zoology subject back in my first year of college and we had to catch frogs in order to study the different systems of a body. i wa really disgusted but i had to face it. i used to make my boardmate and her bf to accompany me while catching frogs.^__^;; i would put them in a bottle or just a plastic bag and then i would bring them to school. some of us used gloves while dissecting a frog but i found it a hassle so i used my bare hands even if it meant touching its rough and wartful skin. ugh.

| judiel (28) | 10 months ago | I love frogs! But to dissect them! I feel so sad for those poor animals.

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | Thanks for the vivid pics of frogs internal organs! lol. I've been lucky enough not to have been subjected to this in the past. I think here in Oz, they should be sending the kids out for Cane Toads (non native) and try to achieve 2 things at once! lol.

secretbear (4545) | 10 months ago | LOL i don't know if it was really helpful for us. the subject was only a prerequisite in our course. after that, we concentrated on fishes since that's our main concern. the frogs are only helpful to those biology and medical students. LOL i still can't imagine how i was able to touch frogs with my bare hands. ew.>. <

7. mimpi1911 (5218) | 10 months ago | Fascination for frogs (FFF)?? I do remember having a kind of attachment for these ambhibians, a moist, slimy creature with two big eyes popping up on either side hopping forever for habitat. How was that? lol.. Jokes apart, I used to feel sick when we were supposed to cut chloroformed toads in biology class.I still remember, on Thursdays I used to feign tummy pains and stuff like that to skip the trauma of disection. I somehow managed those science classes, it was a real dread though. I haven't come across another live frog since then and I am glad that I didn't. For FFF has always been countered by the immense sadness that deter true understanding of the creature!

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | I can't believe the number of responses I've received about people having to dissect these beautiful creatures in high school. I never had to, although in Agricutlture, when I chickens got attacked by a fox, our teacher said why not! Frogs are fascinating creatures and a good indicator of how an ecosystem is going. I like watching how they interact with the world around them and their reactions to me. most seem to enjoy my company, once I've caught them. I am very gentle in handling them and the way I speak to them.

mimpi1911 (5218) | 10 months ago | You are indeed a thoughtful person. Trust me not all these days care about a frog or such creatures for that matter. I would try to be more compassionate next time. Thanks.

8. CurlyRed (2388) | 10 months ago | When I was young, we spent ou summers on a lake and there was a swamp in a bay nearby. I would catch frogs and turtles all the time. My favorite thing was to hold a frog so his back feet were on my thumb and my index and middle finger each held a foot..gently of course. For whatever reason, I took great delight in watching the frog go up and down on my hand.. Jumping, but not going anywhere. It was just really neat to watch.

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | Yeah, it is neat to watch how they move. I've had them jump into my lap before and not want to leave. Where we live, it is a common sight to see them in the bathroom or in the toilet bowl! lol. Our weather is quite warm during summer and not too cold in winter, so they are active most of the year. When it rains, they are out in force. Most of the ones we see live and breed in trees and are called Tree Frogs. I guess a house is made out of wood! lol.

9. ChaJudLeoBit (718) | 10 months ago | We have toads all over the place here. I used to play with them all the time when I was younger. I'd find bugs and feed them. It was cool, they'd just sit there and wait for me to come back with a bug, then gulp it down. We had one with a messed up leg and we saw him every year when they came back out. That was neat to see him back after the winter. I don't know what heppened to his leg, it looked like it got squashed or something, so I fed him all the time, until he stopped coming around. I don't remember how many years he hung around, but he was my buddy.

newzealtralian (1980) | 10 months ago | It is nice to see them come back again and again. It means you provide an enviornment they are happy with. frogs and toads are an integral part of our ecosystems and feeding them is a great way to give them a helping hand!
| |
ChaJudLeoBit (718) | 9 months ago | Then I felt bad about condemning the poor june bugs to their deaths. They might have lived a long happy life if not for my interferrance.

10. theprogamer (7325) | 9 months ago | CUTE!!^^ Frogs are so great and if they were around here I'd probably try to catch a couple of them myself! I do put them back, or they leap out and escape. A bit of a heartbreaker from my perspective. Amphibians and reptiles are great!
| |
| |
newzealtralian (1980) | 9 months ago | And they can be used to monitor the health of an ecosystem too! It rained quite hard here the other night, and the frog chorus was amazing!
