Scoliosis surgery and future prospects

November 6, 2007 10:14am CST
My scoliosis developed at the age of 13, after a growth spurt. Treatment with a Milwaukee brace followed for 3 years combined with 5 years of 2xweek physiotherapy. At 16, the doctor said it had settled and that was it. At about 25 I had severe tingling and numbness setting in my right arm, so obviously it wasn't that settled! Seeing an excellent surgeon, we had to conclude it had deteriorated to a 62-degree bend, and needed surgery to avoid any serious organ, lung etc damage. The surgery method was implementing a double Harrington bar with bone grafts for fusion. Now 14 years on, it has been pretty good and almost problem free. However noticing more lower back pain and also getting pain near the bars at the top. Wondering if there are people out there who are like 20 years on after surgery and what they experience ... And also what methods are effective for pain as taking pain killers is not an option really.

My son Dan aka zero_capacity@yahoo.com had Scoliosis surgery at age 18 and is now almost 35 and things got a lot worse his back pain keeps him awake he is on morphine which is doing a number on his intestines and he wants off. His shoulders have deteriorated. He was not supposed to grow after the Zilch procedure but did and that after the surgery. Docs say he has a back worse than most 80 year old men. He has given up doing most of things he enjoys in life. He hates it and the likely hood of his living to see any grandchildren. His two kids are age 10 and 11. He is sad and mad and wants some things changed. He is in constant chronic pain. update me on your condtion. Email him I am sure you and he can share some thoughts.

I really do feel for you, first let me say Welcome to MyLot and I hope that you enjoy it here. I have had Scoliosis since I was a teen also. My 4th and 5th vertabra are fused together so I have very little movement in my neck and many other things from neck to tale bone, I have never had surgery but sometimes wish that I did.
