Sore feet.

My friend had diabetes for many years but his general health is good and he is very stable. During the last year, however, he has developed an extreme soreness on the soles of his feet whenever pressure has been applied, e.g. when digging with spade, standing on ladders, walking on hard surface, even when applying the accelerator in the car. The pain is extreme and sometimes lasts for a day or so. Could you tell me if you have heard of this condition in other people and what is the reason for it?
