My husband and I are planning to re-do our wedding ceremony when he returns from Iraq on our anniversary after his return. I am quite nervous because he is insisting on writing our own vows. Our wedding was quite hurried because of his impending deployment and we got married on his lunch break. He in his ACU's and I in a black suit. He says he really wants to write from the heart how he feels and the standard vows don't cover that. So, I have never done this and am not very creative when it comes to this. Any ideas? I am brain dead, but I want to make it really special. I just get so nervous when it comes to things like this.

My fiance and I are actually writing the whole ceremony ourselves becuase we're not Christian, but we're spiritual and romantic. Standard phrases don't really work for us. I have a few ceremony styles and vow books that I research from. There are tons of write-your-own-vow books out there. You can also pull from poems, sonnets, movies, plays, songs or quotes to help verbalize how you feel if you can't think of anything eloquent enough on your own.

Wel, the reason I mentioned not being Christian is becuase where we're getting married only offers two ceremony styles, civil and Christian. Neither works for us, so we're just going to do it ourselves.

That seems to be typical in most places. That is all that is offered here as well as far as I know. I still think it is quite unique and lovely that you will formulate your own words and make your ceremony so individualized.

What you and your fiance are doing sounds very unique and very romantic! I like that idea. What a great way to show your love for each other on such a special day. I don't think you have to be any certain religion or anything as long as you both share a spirituality together so that you can forge this relationship. Thanks for commenting! I will have to look into getting one of those books to get some more ideas. The movie and song idea is also quite good!

Wow...I've never been in the spot to have to write my own vows. I really like the traditional ones. My only suggestion is just to write what's in your heart. Take your time and write from your heart. "COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS" **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I have thought of making a list of all the things that I love about him and go from there. I am just worried it will all come out jumbled up and not make any sense! Thanks for your advice and response!

This is so romantic, I think the only way you can do it is first sit and think of all the things you love most about your husband then write this down and make notes from there. You'll probably surprize yourself it'll all come together. I'd be happy to help if you need my advice and ask more than two or three people because that's how you can get different opinions. Good Luck hun!!!

Thanks for the help! I really do appreciate it. My girlfriend is helping me put my thoughts together. There are so many jumbled up in my brain that I can't put them together in a coherent paragraph hahaha! I don't want to sound like a babbling idiot hehehe! If you have any thoughts, poems or anything you would like to throw my way, please feel free! I can use all the help I can get!
