Chrysanthemums have long been one of my favorite flowers. It is due to the influence of a great-aunt that lived nearby when I was growing up. She loved flowers so much, and "mums" were her favorites. I could always look forward to her bringing me a huge bouquet whenever I was in the hospital. Chrysanthemums are very prominent in both the Chinese and Japanese cultures. The ancient Chinese name for them was "chu." They would boil the roots to make a draft for headaches; they used the sprouts and petals as food; and they brewed the leaves to drink as a tea.

I have a chrysanthemum memory. Everything my mom ever did, she seemed to go overboard. We had tons of mums, as I remember, one particular year, and they had all come into bloom. There was an early freeze warning went out, and mom, not wanting to waste a bloom, got every vase she owned out, and we cut every chrysanthemum we could. We had huge bouquets, as I remember. Of course that was about 45 years ago.

The chrysanthemum is my birth flower for November! Very nice flowers and they are also my favorites. I think I know what I'll be asking for on my birthday, which is a few days away. Chu, I like that, it sounds very nice. I never knew that mums were so important but thank you for sharing this.

I love flowers, rockvixen, mainly because they were always a big part of my environment where I grew up. I am partial to the yellow ones because that is the color my aunt always gave me.[smile]
