Has the PS2 become like the Atari 2600 of this generation?

Atari 2600 - Showing off an old model called the Atari 2600. It had the longest life span of any home console bar-none.

Since the PlayStation 3 has come out, you would think that Sony wouldn't be making anymore PS2 games. I believe both Nintendo and Microsoft have stopped making games for the previous consoles being the Gamecube and Xbox. This one is an interesting case. They are still making them I guess because of the PS3 not really working out as Sony had anticipated. Is anybody else surprised by this? I think for some reason that could draw comparasions on how back in the past the Atari 5200 was rejected even though it was superior to the Atari 2600 but people wanted the 2600 more than the 5200. I don't know if anyone has ever thought of that. It can be said that so far that there are games for it that are also on the PS3. I find it very ironic and interesting to say the least. I know there are more people that love the PS2 and consider it one of the best systems out there in the market but it comes down to what you really enjoy. I'm not sure how many have heard of it but there could be some comparasions in that respect. Only reason being it has to do with the acceptance/rejection rate of the next gen console. It could have happened with both the 360 and the Wii but it didn't. This isn't a Sony bash thread. I just find this very interesting. For those who have never seen an Atari 2600, there's a picture of it. Do you agree or disagree with that? All opinions are welcome and maybe if there are any gamers from the past that actually knows about the 2600 in favor over the 5200 would really help add their insight. This was done after extensive research to make that discovery.

yes I agree with you about they don't doing more games for old consoles I think it is a shame because a lot of people likes the like for example PS2, you know that it is a big bussines they will not very happy with people playing for years on old consoles, I hardly remember the atari 2600 but maybe you have reason about people wanting more the atari 2600 than the 5200.

I've never played an Atari 5200 but the reason I heard had something to do with the controller. I'll see if I can find a picture of it. From what I've seen and I saw this as a review on Gametrailers, it had numeric buttons and an analog joystick. Sounds cool doesn't it? The problem I heard about was that the controller was very fragile and could break easily. I can't tell you if that's true or not. Maybe also the fact to play the old Atari 2600 games, they didn't want to have to buy a totally new game or something to that effect. I'm not 100% certain on the reasons but those are some common ones I've heard about.

I think the reason ps2 is doing so well, is that the ps3 is really above most people's gaming system budget. I see people on average shell out up to $250 for a game console, but not really much more. The graphics are good on a ps2 and there is an game extensive library. ps3 is still building their library. I can't really see shelling out that kind of money for a system that has high def graphics. Big Deal, a ps2 looks great on a High Def TV System anyways. Plus, Wii came out and although the graphics are not as good as PS3, it is in budget and much more inovative.
