I have been up cooking now since 4:30 AM. I had 5 turkeys and 2 hams to get ready for tomorrow. My friend, Barbara, is helping too. We will be out delivering these dinners tomorrow morning at 6:00AM to the families we have on our list of needy families.Which means our family will not be eating until around 4 or 5 o'clock but they are used to that by now. It has been our way of starting the holiday season for years. Next we will be out shopping for the children who depend on the Salvation Army for their Christmas presents. What do you do to help the needy during the holidays?

Wow Kowgirl! What hard work that must have been, but so worth the feeling you got from helping others! I donated some canned goods to a Church down the street last week. We're not so great off, but I know we are much better off than a lot more people. I really wanted to help. A friend of ours fried 100 turkeys and gave them away to our local food pantries and places that were helping the less fortunate. I think when your in the position to help, you should do what you can.

After reading that the food pantries for Second Harvest are almost bare
I was just thinking about what just one can from everyone in my neighborhood
could mean to another family. I know it doesn't sound like much but just one can
from 100 people could really help. I may just bring this up to my friends and see
if they will mention this at their church on Sunday. I know I will be.

Thats a really good idea Kowgirl. The people I donated too came to my door asking. Which was really a coincodence since I had been listening to the radio that morning and had heard about a food drive that made me want to do something to help, but couldnt get to the food drop off location. So He just sent some of his helpers to my door! It wasnt the place I was thinking of donating but it went to someone in need. :)

Our church makes baskets and deliver them to needy families every year. We include turkeys, potatoes, boxes of stuffing, and canned goods. We also put a pie into the baskets. We will do this again at Christmas time. We also have an angel tree where we buy gifts for needy families in our area. I think it is awesome that you guys cook meals for these families.

Thanks God for people like you and the other church members...I have always tried to put myself in their shoes. After all it could happen to any of us.
It's a fun thing as well and it's not hard to do. We can do other things while the turkeys are cooking. We enjoy the look on their face when they see that it is already cooked and ready to eat. We used to just take the fixings but found that some didn't have enough oil(or didn't want to use their electric) to cook, so we started doing that too. Better to do that than have it go to waste. At least we know they will have something to eat for a few days. My friend Sherry gives them the fixings and the recipe for turkey soup. You never know what all of us can( or will) do when we get together. Right now Barb and Donna are discussing whether or not to put raisins or pineapple in the sweet potato dish...I bet they use both. LOL
