Do you feed raw to your dog?  email this discussion to a friend?

I read an article about raw feeding from Jane Anderson's raw learning site, saying that raw feeding is very good for your dog's health. She says that it's a natural diet and can keep your dog from various allergy problems and the benefits include no doggy odour, natural clean teeth, better weight control, etc. Does anyone here have the experience of feeding raw to your dog? Is it really good and effective as they say? Aren't chicken bones dangerous? Can commercial dog food really cause series of disease when your dog gets old? I just wanna know how many people out there are feeding a raw diet to their dogs and how their dogs are doing with the diet.

In my opinion I dont think its good to feed your pets raw meat. Ive always fed my pets cooked meat. Every once in awhile you can give them some raw meat but not too often. Chicken bones are very dangerous to your pet. Any kind of bones are bad. Except for the real big ones. Besides feeding your dog meat all the time will tend to get expensive.LOL

Thanks for responding!
I've been feeding my dog cooked meat, too. I gave him a piece of raw meat once and he seemed ok with it. ^^ I'm just curious about the raw feeding theory cuz they say there are so many benifits which sounds appealing! And they say that uncooked chicken bones are really soft so it won't be a problem. I'm just wondering if anyone has the experience.

"Real" food is DEFINITELY better for your pets than commercial brands. There is so much junk in the ones at the stores, it's really disgusting. I feed my cats and my dogs either Wellness or Solid Gold foods, simply because I'm too lazy to cook for them! LOL I wouldn't give them everything totally raw, except for maybe fruits and veggies, which are really good for them, too. Wellness and Solid Gold are available online and in a few pet supply stores, and is a bit more expensive than regular foods, but soooo much better! It has a ton of nutrients and minerals, and fruits and veggies, as well as no preservatives or junk, and some even have organically fed animal meats in them. And yes, bones are bad, unless they're American made and big enough for your breed of dog, as a chew or treat. Beef, Pork, and Ostrich bones are popular, and usually large enough ans safe. Try www.jefferspet.com for great pet items, including a ton of bones and treats and organic, natural foods, treats and products. They have the lowest prices on anything, anywhere!

Thank you for your response! I agree that natural food is best for our pets. I also have doubts for raw feeding so I won't try it before I'm absolutely sure that it is safe and benificial. And thanks for the site you recommanded!

i started feeding my dog raw food about 6 months ago. His breath doesn't smell nearly as bad, poops a lot less (sometimes only once a day) and has a nice shiny coat.

There are a lot of misconceptions about feeding raw food, uncooked bones are not dangerous as long as they are not too small. If they are too small then your dog could swallow the bone whole and choke on them. Cooked bones on the otherhand are very dangerous. Cooked bones splinter when broken apart. They are sharp and can cause problems while trying to pass through your dog.

The big problem with most commercial dog food is that it is basically junk food. People can east fast food from McDonalds without having problems, but only eating fast food will cause all sorts of medical problems. Its the same with most commercial dog food.

another big argument is that when you feed commercial dog food, you dont really know what is in the food and where it is from. When you feed your dog raw food, or home-made food for that matter, you know exactly what is in it
