What do you do for a person who has a dying pet?

If you know your doggie is dying and there is no way around it, what would you do. The vet told you that all you can do is let him rest what would you do? Is replacing another pet a good idea? Should we get the pet owner another pet? Give her pet a funeral? Take the pet owner on an outing? Just buy her a card and let the pet owner soak for a few days? What do you do in something like this?
