Oh great! Now I have high blood pressure! |
|
Here I am, getting close to the end of all the tests required for my gastric bypass surgery, and now all of a sudden, I have developed hypertension. Grrrr! Although maybe it might be a good thing, in a way. My doc says that this more than likely will get me in for my surgery sooner than expected. I was doing really well up until about a month or so ago. During the last five out of six doctors appointments, my pressure has been bordering on being on the high side...today was 150/90. The doctor put me on a low dosage blood pressure medication, and hopefully it will help. This actually scares me a little bit, since both of my parents had high blood pressure, and my mom died from heart problems, and my dad died from a sudden massive heart attack right after being given a "clean bill of health" from his doctor. Will you all please do me a big favor? Will you please pray, meditate, or however you do it, that this will get better and not worse? I would very much appreciate it. Lots of love and big hugs to everyone.

1. Adoniah (2670) | 2 years ago | Love your Cheshire!!! Will hold good thoughts for your blood pressure and surgery. One reason it may have spiked is worry over the upcoming surgery and the fact that you probably have not been getting much exercise recently. That should improve when your health improves right? Keep the faith take your meds!

Katlady2 (4435) | 2 years ago | Thanks for the compliment on my pink kitty. I'm kinda partial to him myself. LOL! Yeah, the worry is part of it I'm sure. And I haven't been able to exercise much because I'm always in so much pain. Hopefully it will all improve soon. Thanks so much hon.

sara03 (1548) | 2 years ago | Hi friends, not to get alarmed over this BP. it is curable. I am sharing an article on this. "Changing your lifestyle can go a long way toward controlling high blood pressure. But sometimes lifestyle changes aren't enough. In addition to diet and exercise, your doctor may recommend medication to lower your blood pressure. Which category of medication your doctor prescribes depends on your stage of high blood pressure and whether you also have other medical conditions. To reduce the number of doses you need a day, which can reduce side effects, your doctor may prescribe a combination of low-dose medications rather than larger doses of one single drug. In fact, two or more blood pressure drugs often work better than one. Sometimes finding the most effective medication — or combination of drugs — is a matter of trial and error. The major types of medication used to control high blood pressure include: * Thiazide diuretics. These medications act on your kidneys to help your body eliminate sodium and water, reducing blood volume. Thiazide diuretics are often the first — but not the only — choice in high blood pressure medications. In a 2006 study, diuretics were a key factor in preventing heart failure associated with high blood pressure. * Beta blockers. These medications reduce the workload on your heart, causing your heart to beat slower and with less force. When prescribed alone, beta blockers don't work as well in blacks — but they're effective when combined with a thiazide diuretic. * Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. These medications help relax blood vessels by blocking the formation of a natural chemical that narrows blood vessels. ACE inhibitors may be especially important in treating high blood pressure in people with coronary artery disease, heart failure or kidney failure. Like beta blockers, ACE inhibitors don't work as well in blacks when prescribed alone, but they're effective when combined with a thiazide diuretic. * Angiotensin II receptor blockers. These medications help relax blood vessels by blocking the action — not the formation — of a natural chemical that narrows blood vessels. Like ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers often are useful for people with coronary artery disease, heart failure and kidney failure. * Calcium channel blockers. These medications help relax the muscles of your blood vessels. Some slow your heart rate. Calcium channel blockers may work better for blacks than do ACE inhibitors or beta blockers alone. A word of caution for grapefruit lovers, though. Grapefruit juice interacts with some calcium channel blockers, increasing blood levels of the medication and putting you at higher risk of side effects. Researchers have identified the substance in grapefruit juice that causes the potentially dangerous interaction, which may one day lead to commercial grapefruit juices that don't pose a risk of interaction. For now, however, talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you're concerned about interactions. * Renin inhibitors. A new drug Tekturna (aliskiren) is a renin inhibitor. Renin is an enzyme produced by your kidneys that starts a cascade of chemical steps that increases blood pressure. Tekturna works by reducing the ability of renin to begin this process. Tekturna acts earlier in your body's blood pressure regulation process than most other blood pressure medications. It also can be used well with the other major classes of blood pressure drugs to improve their actions. Tekturna can be used alone, but it's more effective when used in combination with existing high blood pressure medications, such as water pills (diuretics). Tekturna's effects on blood pressure last more than 24 hours, so it can be taken once daily in oral tablet form." HEALTH IS WEALTH

Katlady2 (4435) | 2 years ago | Thank you so much Sara for that information. The med I'm on is an ACE inhibitor, and so far, no side effects. Keep your fingers crossed that it stays that way.

Hugs to my Kat!

pyewacket (10670) | 2 years ago | Oh--as a PS..are you taking any other meds?? Some medications can bring a rise in blood pressure. For awhile there I was taking low dosages of theophylline which is actually an asthma med...since I couldn't tolerate allergy/sinus meds well, my doc thought the theo. would at least keep the congestion out of my system. But as long as I took it, and like I said low dosages of it, my blood pressure went sky high. Now that I no longer take it, my pressure is normal--just a thought there

Katlady2 (4435) | 2 years ago | Thanks for the advice hon. Fortunately my doctor is keeping a close eye on the meds that I am taking, and he is making sure that what I am taking meshes together. That and I stick with the same pharmacy, so they know really well what I'm taking too. Thank you so much my friend. Hugs to you sweetie.

4. Songbird425 (614) | 2 years ago | Congrats on being closer to surgery! I will hopefully have my surgery (I'm most likely getting lap band)next year. I've heard that once you have the surgery, your hypertension will go away. I said a prayer for you. I hope everything goes well!

|
|
Katlady2 (4435) | 2 years ago | How awesome that you will be getting your surgery too! I'm going for the Rouxen-Y procedure instead of the band. I've talked to many patients that had the surgery, and their blood pressures went down, and other ailments pretty much went away. Thanks so much hon.

5. theprogamer (7385) | 2 years ago | I'll end the night here then Katlady. Keep taking your multivitamin or required vitamins. Try to boost Vitamin C intake too that helps BP. B complex vitamins help with blood flow so there is something. You've got my thoughts and prayers.

Katlady2 (4435) | 2 years ago | Thank you so much Sara. I'm hoping that my surgery will help alleviate, if not at least reduce, all of the symptoms I've been going through the last few years. But I have started using salt substitute and other salt free flavorings, and I just got my recumbent bike set up and am using that. Oh...and thank you for the article you posted under one of the other member's replies. You helped to clear up a little more about the medication I'm taking. Big hugs to you my friend.

| darktwilite (46) | 2 years ago | well bloodpressure is basically due to excess of sodium ions in the body whose number is controlled by a chemical complex called renin angiotensin aldosterone complex in the kidneys. So BP can be due to disfunction of this complex....First thing i would suggest is cut down on sodium ie use less r no salt in food and eat foods rich in potassium.this should help a lot
