The GOP's 2008 Willie Horton? |
|
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has been shocking people across the nation in recent weeks with his sudden surge in the polls, moving from an "also ran" to the leader in some Iowa GOP polls and now polling second in some national polls. However, as can be expected when someone reaches front-runner status Huckabee is now coming under more scrutiny. Today it was reported on ABC News that when Huckabee was Governor of Arkansas he supported the parole of a convicted rapist who then raped and murdered a young pregnant woman. Although Huckabee has attempted to downplay his involvement in this man's parole member of the parole board have alleged the former Governor personally wrote letters stating he believed the man should be released from prison. It was reported on the Huffington Post that conservative activists had worked very hard for this rapist's release. Conservative groups wanting a convicted rapist to be released from prison? Does that strike you as being a bit odd as it did me? Maybe the fact that his victim just happened to be a distant cousin of Bill Clinton had something to do with it. Some in the far-right had such an intense hatred for the former President they didn't believe the man who had raped his distant cousin deserved to be punished!
This isn't a pro or anti-Huckabee post; I won't be voting in the Republican primary anyway and I kind of doubt I'll be voting for the GOP nominee...(News Flash!) I'm not sure how much responsibility Huckabee had in this man's release but the family of his murder victim certainly do not believe he should be President of the United States. Let's discuss it; what do you think of this whole incident? Annie

anniepa (9276) | 3 years ago | I like that Ron Paul's against the war but I know very little about him on other issues. Can you fill me in a little? I must say, we sure didn't get the LESSER of any evils the last time! I think if we get another one even remotely close to Bush I'm going to see if one of my myLot friends from Canada will take me in, or at least show me around up there. Annie

lilwonders123 (1252) | 3 years ago | Sure, if you want to learn about Ron Paul go to http://www.ronpaul2008.com I do not know if you will agree with everything about him. I do not agree with his opinion on abortion but he will NOT over turn Roe V Wade so I feel comfortable with him. Other than that one issue I agree with him completely. He says it is time to put American's first. He will fix social security, boarder security,no amnesty for illegals. He is in complete support of fiscal responsibility which this country desperately needs. He will stop the North American Union and NAFTA. He also fully supports my right to homeschool my children (the only candidate to do that). Take a look at the site and the issues page on it and see what you think. I truly feel he is the best man to get us back on track. Why should we give away Billions of dollars of tax payer money every year to foreign countries when our own people here need it. That money should be put to work for us.
I really hope I do not have to do a lesser of the two evils thing again this election. It really breaks my heart to have to do that. I was not crazy about Bush but I did not like the people running against him. It was kinda a damned if you do damned if you don't situation for me. American's deserve better than that. We deserve candidates that are good, honest and have our (not special interest groups and lobbyist) best interests in mind at all times. Call it a pipe dream but that is the candidate I want. I would love to have an election were we did not know who to vote for because everyone was just soo good that it was hard to choose between them. Isn't that what we deserve?

anniepa (9276) | 3 years ago | Absolutely, that's what we deserve. It's really a disgrace that in a country like the US with, I think it's up to almost 300 million people and we can't come up with a group of truly outstanding candidates. I know there has to be lots of great men and women here who would make an amazing leader but it's all about money and special interest groups. Not to mention the dirty politics and smear campaigns. I mean, I want to know the background of the person I'm going to vote for and all that but could we have a little less negative and a little more positive in the campaign ads? Don't give me 10,000 reasons I shouldn't vote for your opponent including things he or she did or said in kindergarten, give me one or two good reasons I should vote for you! And if someone changes their mind over something or - God forbid - makes a mistake, just say so, explain the change of heart, apologize for the mistake and get over it and move on! I think the voters are adult enough to hear the truth and to make their choice based on who the person really is now not some role they're playing or some script they're reading day after day. And if you don't know for sure what you'd do in a certain situation SAY SO! Nobody enters the White House or even Congress and the Senate automatically knowing everything there is to know. These people are supposed to be serving US, WE pay their salaries and their expenses so woud it hurt if they asked us what we want now and then? What I'd really love to see is someone run for President who has actually experienced real life on the "other side" as in people who sometimes aren't sure if they're going to be able to pay the mortgage or who knows what it's like to face a layoff or who's had to tell their kids they can't take them to McDonald's because they can't afford it. OK, enoough already! Annie

2. Adoniah (2675) | 3 years ago | I think this is the worst election line up ever, at least since I was able to vote. If this is the very worst thing that Huckabee did, then it would not be so bad, but the skeletons have just begun to rattle.

anniepa (9276) | 3 years ago | I must say, IF Huckabee knowingly played a big part in helping someone he believed to be a rapist get out on parole because one of his victims was a distant relative of President Clinton that's pretty bad. Notice I did say "IF" because I'm not trying to attack the guy if he had little or nothing to do with it. In my mind that's far worse than simply making a mistake and believing someone deserved to be paroled only to have them commit another crime later. I'd feel the same way no matter who the victim was related to, not just because it was Clinton and I'm a Democrat. If it were a Democrat who had done this and the victim was Bush's cousin I'd feel the same way. Whoever was pushing for this was taking a vendetta to the worst possible extreme and it resulted in a young woman's death. Annie

3. susaneverson (4945) | 3 years ago | It sounds like Huckabee was under a lot of pressure from one group and now it sounds like he is being made to explain by another group. "They" say hindsight is 20-20, so I wonder if he would go back and change it. lol Like most people who have a job to do, he did what he thought was right "at the time". I am sure most of us if not all of us have done things in our jobs that we wish we had never done. Susan

Adoniah (2675) | 3 years ago | The only thing that stays constant in politics is that if you are goning to run you have to be prepared to live under a microscope. If you have done anything criminal or stupid in your past and cannot stand the scrutiny just do not run!
