As a mother what are your feelings towards Dora the explorer?

This is a discussion with your kids in mind, and your feelings on the nick jr show dora the explorer. I pose this question to you do your feel that Dora obtains the goal that the show is supposed to obtain? Dora is a multicultural shoe that teaches kids all the basics that they learn in kindergarten and preschool, but on top of that it also is supposed to teach your child some spanish. After this being said do you really think that Dora obtains those goals or is just a mildly entertaining kids cartoon?

I think it depends on your child whether it is obtaining your goal. My son likes it, but he doesn't repeat any of it. My friend's son is the same age..3 and he loves it so much he repeats everything!!! My son repeated more of the different languages on Baby Einstein than Dora.

I personally do not like Dora at all, i mean sure its got some benifits, but i live in canada and our second language is NOT spanish. It is french. And i know that kids learn from repetition, but we need to be able to tolerate the show too right ? I just really can't stand it. I think the first one i seen was the one where dora's mom is having a baby. and that one is REALLY repetative, and i refuse to let my daughter watch that show, or barney either. I dislike both of those shows, and if i have any say she will never watch either. She really doesnt' have much intrest in tv at all so that is good. She really enjoys her books though. I'm glad, but i have never really turned the tv on much for her. IF the tv is on then its usually on the kids music station that our provider has. I think its treehouse music. She does however really like rolly polly ollie, which i doubt is very educational, but she only sees it probably once a week.

i don't like to let my daughter watch tv that much but she loves Dora and yes the repition drives me crazy, but you would think for canada they might have a variation where they would teach french. It would make it more useful just not more tolerable. I tend to leave the room and do my morning baking when Dora comes on. It's her time away from mommy and my time to prepare goodies and snacks for the kids for when my other four come home from school. I will say this much she can pronuonce some of the spanish words but I doubt my four yr old remembers what it is the word meant.

My son is almost 9 so when he was starting to get out of the little kid cartoons, Dora was just starting up. Out of the cartoons that were available at the time (Teletubbies, Blues Clue, etc) I did not find it bad at all. He did pick up some of the Spanish words, which is great because kids need to be exposed to a second language as soon as possible. I didn't find it as repeatative and annoying as many other kids shows are.

i agree that kids need to be exposed to other languages but the repitition of Dora drives me nutty ... My daughter will continue to sing the same thing over and over until I ask her to please stop and that may be hours after the show has ended. thank you for your response. I honestly think that the school should start giving them second languages earlier like in elementary school. I lived in texas and that is what they did with us we learned spanish and english side by side .. I think that it would be easier for them to start before they get to highschool what about you?

I do not have kids, but did watch it once and it made me crazy, but then I am not the intended audience. A story of why I watched Dora - I was at work, we were at a walk for Autism, I work with developmentally disabled adults, when one of the guys came up to me and started speaking in Spanish. I told him I did not understand Spanish and his reply was to tell me to watch Dora and learn it. My understanding was he learned the fundamentals watching Dora, then he started learning more from other children's books and toys and had learned some solid fundamentals starting with Dora where he learned to like Spanish

thank you for your input I really appreciate it. I know dora can be educationally helpful it's just with trina she learns the numbers the shapes but isn't getting the true comprehension of spanish.Meaning she will repeat the phrase in the sing song way they teach and run all over the house singing it but won't use it for anything that it truly applies to.

Personally I think it does. My little nephew just shouts out spanish words once in a while without anybody teaching him those. He also counts pretty well like what they do in the show. I think her show is both entertaining and intellectually stimulating. They make room for children's responses so they not only watch but also take part of the show. And Dora seems to be talking to the viewers.

I think that is about the only thing i like about the show at this point is the fact that they do leave it open for the kids to respond and trina does that very loudly and happily...
