What type of gambler are you? email this discussion to a friend?

Some of you know that I went away over the weekend to Atlantic City for my birthday. We had a BLAST!!! It was so nice to get away, it seems like it's been forever. And I LOVE to gamble, so this was great.

My husband and I have two different outlooks on gambling though. For me, it's entertainment value only. I only take with me as much money as I know I'm not coming home with. For my husband, it's a total waste of money. Well, normally, I have a "limit" and I stick to it, but this time I took a little extra - I scraped together as much extra money as I could out of our budget and took it all. It wouldn't hurt us if we left it all there, so I wasn't too worried. And my husband knows I wont take more than we can afford so he was cool with it too.

Well, when we first get up there, he was playing the slots and won $60 right off the bat. He cashes it out and that's what he's taking home. As soon as he wins anything, it's going home with us. Well, I'm not much for slots and my $20 went really fast. So it was time to move over to the craps table. When I play craps, any $25 chip I win, goes into my husbands pocket. When the dice are friendly, I'll lose track of what I've given him. For a while, the dice were VERY friendly. I knew I had given him more than the $100 I started with. So we were ahead. If it were up to him, we'd put aside the amount we brought and take that home, only spending the money that we had won.

We had taken $500 and at that point had $700 so he'd say take the $500 back home and play the rest of the weekend on the $200. Well, I say I've only spent $150, I brought $500 to spend, I have $350 left to spend. Since I have the original money, that's normally what we do, but we also have a good time joking about what we "should" do with it.

After we ate dinner, we went back to my craps table and HAD A BLAST!! And I handed over a lot of $25 chips to my husband, but I also put a lot of money down there too, so we only came out a little bit ahead. But it was fun:)

So, the next day we did pretty good early on - at one point I ran out of my chips and my husband gave me a couple of the winnings so I could play a little longer. Well, things went pretty bad so we went to eat. After lunch, it was worse!!! We went through a couple hundred in no time at all. We got back down to the original $500 plus a little and called it a day. On the way out, I said (not entirely joking) how about $100 more before we go? He said no way! He would have been happy NOT playing the last few hundred and keeping that in his pockets!

But, we had a blast! It was about $150 for hotel, food and gas for the weekend and all the "gambling" money's going back into the bank!

Are you more like me - play it all - or more like my husband - keep it all?

I am a gambler much like your husband. The trip expenses would have been put immediately into my pocket, and I only would have continued to play with my winnings. I'm not a big gambler to begin with, so that may be the reason. To me $20 at the casino is enough.

I usually "budget" $100/day per person. Since my husband doesn't gamble I play $200/day. And since I don't play the slots, $20 doesn't go very far. It's kinda "scary" because when I'm playing craps, I can have almost $100 on the table at one time. If someone rolls a 7, that money's gone. On a good roll, I can make that much in 4 dice rolls though so it comes back quickly also. It's very exciting - when you're winning!

Oh, now see, that wouldn't be exciting to me at all. It would be extremely stressful. I do understand seeing it as pure entertainment money, but I guess I just have other things that I enjoy more.

I know, my husband's the same way. He used to cringe every time I'd throw $100 on that table. Now he knows it the same as when he sends $100 to Cabellas for some hunting stuff! It's just entertainment.

Wow, it sounds like you really did have a great time, reinydawn!

I am not a gambler when it comes to using money in the traditional sense such as you describe here, but I am a bit of a gambler when it comes to taking risks in my life and with investments.

By the way, Happy Birthday!

I gamble with "other" things too, but I make sure I weigh everything to determine if it's a good gamble or not. Some risks are good, some I stay away from:)

Thanks for the birthday wishes! I'll have to remember to use the right number tomorrow:)

It is best to be like your husband that way it never gets to be addictive. I have watched people lose everything they own in a day because they did not take precautions.

I have always gambled, but I go into the game with X amount of money and no access to any more. When I run out, I am out. Fortunately, my Father taught me how to play cards and he taught me very well. I rarely lose but he also taught me, if I do lose, to cut my loses to a minimum. Your husband sounds very smart to me!

Yup, I only take with me what I know I wont come home with. I see people every week spend money on lottery tickets and stuff then not have money for food. That I can't do. But when I do go to the casinos, I like to have a good time so I make sure I have enough money to take (that I don't need) so I can do what I want to with it. My husband doesn't like to part with his money at all.

I am glad you had a great birthday.
Gambling for me is just pure fun. I go in with the idea that I am going to lose so I do not take money that I do not have.
This summer my husband and I went to Lake Tahoe Nevada. We did not even step into a casino! No gambling for us. We did have a good time visiting with our son and looking at the view.

I remember the first time I went to Las Vegas... I was there for 4 days and probably spent $30 gambling. We did so many other things that I didn't have time to gamble! That doesn't happen any more:)
