Pipe Smokers

My great-uncle(who raised me) was a pipe smoker for most of his life. I remember fondly how he would kick back in his recliner in the living room, pipe clenched firmly in his teeth, and talk to me for what seemed like hours. His favorite pipe was a Meerschaum, and he took meticulous care with it. He would clean the bowl and stem frequently. Then he would take out his favorite tobacco, Prince Albert, and fill the bowl and tamp it down. The smell when he finally lit it up became so familiar to me. I never knew him to smoke anything else other than a few cigars over his lifetime. He was truly a man who preferred the pipe. He was almost ninety-years-old when he passed away. My grandfather was also a pipe smoker, and I was given his favorite pipe by my mother about 10 years ago. I cherish it and keep it on display.

I always enjoyed the smell of the pipes my grandfather smoked. I never saw him smoke anything else. He, and his dog are part of my very early, young memories. The later memories of him are not as fond, it is like they are two different people.

Sorry to hear that your later memories of your grandfather are tarnished, GG, but it does sometimes happen. Try and hold onto the good ones though.
