Dress code under Indian culture.

actually our problem is that we no longer have a national dress code. Our own dress in the last century was the dhoti for men and saree for women. Both these were in keeping with the environmental conditions of hot and humid India. However, in order to modernize ourselves, men have taken up the very uncomfortable trousers and shirts and women just don’t seem to know what to take up. Wearing a saree is seen as backward by some while others see it as projecting national pride. Personally I prefer the salwar kameez. Many women don’t wear it and their families don’t allow it either because they think it is a Punjabi/ muslim dress. But the salwar kameez is a very modest and convenient dress for us women.

Thank you for the post. I found it very interesting and informative. You are from, or still living in India I assume? I love learning about other cultures, and peoples. Here in the United States, as I'm sure you know, we don't have ANY dress codes and plain ol' common sense as to what is decent and what is not, or what is appropriate and what is not, has been thrown out the window..thanks, I believe, mostly to Hollywood. It is difficult to raise children in a modest environment when all around them they see the opposite, and are led to believe that these indecent styles are not only okay, but fashionable. We in this country did not always abide by these corrupt examples of behavior and morality.
Good for you and your culture.... stick with it!! Remember the fall of a society usually begins within her own walls, by the corrupt, immoral behavior of it's citizens.

hope u must be doing well
u will be surprised that whenever we talk about dress code for party its usually meant for men, then black suit with tie,
shalwar suit with waist coat etc
nothing is mentioned for women
they can wear trendy cloths, any style
so result is that girls want to look mod, liberal, diffeernt so they follow differnt trends, either its deep neck, bare back, high shirt etc. and fashion shows, tv dramas and films are making them worse

the incident u r quoting is differnt, its specifically about big screen gathering where celbrity try to wear dress to look unique, i dont want comment on that. but look at other gathering, marriages etc, u will find samrtrend

we love to be followers not feel pride on our culture
i am sure ladies in trendy and decent shalwar kameez, sareee, garara, churidat etc look more elegant then western and other dresses

i understand that different country have different cultures especially on clothes..yeah it is sad when some people forget abt it..that is due to the influences of foreign fashion..

Dress code is a very important factor in India. Religion, culture, etc,. are valued very very much.General public expect decent dress to be worn.. So it is difficult to suggest a dress code but every Indian knows what is Indian culture is. However its ones own decision to wear whatever they like but I feel the dress worn should not be vulgar when we one is invited as a guest in a public. In the name of modern dress or fashion some wear indecently and go to functions. Especially girls should wear proper dress. It is very important for the parents to give proper guidelines how their girls should wear dress when they attend any function.

I have read about the case Actually, many girls think that way that if we were modern dress we are modern.But Modern definitely does not mean indescent.We have our own set of dressess & thinking.Modern should be the thinking .There is no harm in western outfits just they should be descent.
