How Tacky!

The casino group trying to get these measures passed to approve the deal Governor Schwarzenegger made with them has a commercial out comparing the fires of California to Hurricane Katrina. What a crock! I don't mean to minimize the devastation of the fires but Katrina virtually wiped out cities across three states and it cut off roads to get to people to get them help. I really resent the media for criticizing the governement and others because they weren't able to get to the area in southern Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas! Unless you've lived down there and understand how the area is set up, you can't possibly understand what the agencies were facing. I grew up in those states and spent most of my childhood in southern Mississippi and Louisiana and Texas and I can tell you that from what I know of what I saw on the news, I can tell you that the bridges into New Orleans and down in Mississippi were cut off from transportation. And, according to people I know who went down there to help, helicopters were dangerous because people tried to grab on and almost caused helicopters to crash. The people who were stranded on those pieces of highway were scared and that is understandable but because they were panicking and tried to grab on to the legs of the helicopters, the pilots were forced to back off and couldn't even drop supplies to the people below without the chance of injuring or killing someone. Please understand that I have family and friends down in southern Mississippi who were equally as stranded from help. Their homes were flooded out. My cousin is still living in the apartment garage above my great aunt's house because they haven't had the money to fix the house up to a livable standard. My mom's sister's house was ruined and she is now living in Alabama because it was going to be too expensive to rebuild. She'd lived in that neighborhood and in that city her whole life and she's in her mid 60's. My other great aunt's house was spared because it is up on a hill but some family friends lost both their parents' house and their house were destroyed. My family and their family has lived in that neighborhood for close to 100 years and for a lot of other people, the devastation of Katrina is no where near over and these are not wealthy people who can easily rebuild their homes. I guess that's why I sort of resent the gaming people for comparing the situation here in California to the situation in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Believe me when I say that I wish no one had lost their homes in the fires or Katrina, especially just before Thanksgiving and Christmas. Losing one's home is a horrible thing to have happen no matter what the circumstance but to have someone who is just trying to get more slot machines in their stupid casinos use these tragedies to increase their gambling garbage is pretty sick! Basically, they are using the Indians and the tragedies of the fires and the hurricanes to promote gambling. And, I don't buy that much of any good will come of this and have every intention of voting against these measures.
