Celebrity fanatics?

Maybe I just don't get it. I just don't understand why people care so much what happens in a celebrities life. Maybe I am out of the loop, but I didn't even know who Heath Whatshisname was, never even heard his name before they announced his death on the news the other day. Why do people care what Brittney Spears does? Or what Tom Cruise says? Sure I can admire someone's talent, but beyond that what they do in their life is their business. I understand that they put themselves in the spotlight, and publicity is publicity whether it's good or bad. But really, when it all comes down to it, they are just people like you and me, and what does fame and fortune really get them in the end? From what I can see a lot of celebrities are so unhappy, so many are addicts, despite their fame and fortune that I don't envy them at all.
