Just something which just popped into my head. I am wondering if their dark color protect them from the sun. Can a black person get sunburn?

acutally, it does matter on your skin tone, because our skin produces these chemical that can block UV from the sun. Though we do need the sun to give up vitamin D. Meaning that we should go out in the sun, just not for a long period of time. People with darker skin tone can go out in the sun more often because they produce more "chemicals" then fairer skin tone people.

But I do have a friend from Jamaica and he says he can get sunburned. It's just that on a white skinned person, you can see the redness, and on their black skin you can't see it, but it still hurts. So, then that means they should also be able to get skin cancer, too, then, right? The black colour would attract more sun than white skin, don't you think?

i would imagine the sun might be harder on their skin because i had a friend back in high school that said her skin was drier because she was black and it peeled so bad, she had to wear oils all the time. its why she was so shiny and pretty

Yes sir I am a black woman and I am of a darker skin tone and I get sunburned and it hurts rather badly, my face peels and all that.. It is a real nasty business. However after reading a few of the other comments I have to say that black people and colored people in general are at risk to skin cancer. Also the reasons behind the belief that coloreds don't get skin cancer is because we have higher amounts of melanin in our bodies that pretty much gives us a little bit more protection from ultraviolet rays than lighter skinned people. Melanin is not a complete source of protection from the sun however it is somewhat effective however skin cancer. I

I think that someone with a fair skin would be more likely to get skin cancer than a person with a dark skin. White people tend to put on sun cream to protect their skin in the hot sun but I don't think black people need to do so. I have met people with skin cancer in Australia and one person in the UK. All of these people were white. I think anyone could get skin cancer and I have not heard about a black person getting sun burn.

Skin cancer is not relative to the skin color. The color wouldn't protect againist sun. Additionally, light colors tend to reflect the light more, and dark ones absorb.

black people and natives have higher production of Melanin (the molecule responsible for their skincolour) which is the bodys own light absorber. Everyone have albino's but white people have the least, therefore we are more prone to diseases such as cancer, Parkinson Disease and others.. I was reading an article where they argued that the white man came from a black man and we lost our darker skin colour and got coloured eyes for circa 20,000 years ago in Northern Europe as the bodies got adapted to the climate. The black man has the ultimate physique and is physically superior to the white man..

im originally from africa now living in australia. let me settle this issue once and for all. pure or 100% blacks dont get sun burnt no matter how long they stay in the sun. period! there are cases of lighter skinned blacks, they do get a relative degree of sunburn
