How long should I breastfeed for? email this discussion to a friend?

Helpful comments only please!

My boy is 20 months old. We are both happy with the nursing arrangement (a few times a day and some at night). He doesn't like to take milk from bottles. I have had a few negative comments recently, from my mother in law, from a doctor, from friends telling me I am crazy to keep it up this long. Very few positive comments. My husband is behind me. I plan to do it till 2 years.

What do you think?

I mean, I would like to stop so I could do a few things I can't while nursing but we are both content so why should I?

Well, personally I think if you are able to do it to about 1 1/2 years old that should be when you start getting them to drink from a sippy cup. But I also believe to each his (or her) own. I guess if you are comfortable with it, go for it, but it sure wouldn't have worked for me.

i had my son completely weaned off bottles at 1 year, so I think almost 2 years is too long...I plan on stop nursing my daughter once she is about 1 year old, too, if not sooner...

I would start introducing him a sippy cup with juice or milk & cutting down on how often you nurse...the longer you wait the worse it will probably be trying to get him to stop...good luck!

he drinks from cups - the only thing he doesn't like to drink from is a latex bottle...but you are so right, its getting harder the longer it goes on for him to wean!

If you and your son are happy, you should continue. Don't let other people tell you what to do. Do what feels right to you. Everyone is different, so there is no rule for how long you should. Do it for as long as you want and forget what people think.

The older he is, the more difficult it may be to wean him, so keep that in mind. He won't need a bottle- he is old enough to drink from a cup. If you get him used to the cup before you wean him that will make it easier. I'm glad your husband is behind you. It makes things easier to have his support, I'm sure.

I think that two years is suitable, but I wouldn't do it past two years. You do what you feel is best for you and your child. don't listen to the negative comments on what other people say. i think you are doing a fine job, but i wouldn't let it go on to much longer. two is good. i would put him on a sippy cup straight off and just stop cold turkey. you'll find out it's gonna be harder on you to let go of that than it will be for him. good luck and God bless

Recently I have had one friend and one family member who nursed their child until the age of 2. The child still drank out of a cup, etc. I nursed my own son until 6 months and would have liked to go longer than that. As far as when to stop that is completely up to you, but I would gradually wean him/her and not just cut them off cold turkey.
