The sad thing for consumers is that there really is no such thing as a "single-region" DVD player. The same model of Sony, Philips, Toshiba, Harmon-Kardon, etc., that gets shipped to the U.S. goes, in identical form, to Europe (Region 2), Australia (Region 6), and so forth. Unless you own a Sony or a Toshiba, you should be able to Google "DVD player hacks," or "code-free DVD hacks" and find a free site that will tell you how to convert your player. (It usually just involves going to the right place in the set-up menu and entering a sequence of numbers from your remote.) A few are more complicated, requiring a notebook, or a Palm, or a Blackberry, but generally any brand but Sony and Toshiba can (and should!) be hacked for all regions. I'd give you a URL to go to, but I'm not sure that's allowed. Good luck. And, if you can't hack the player you have, go down the list of models you can hack, do some research on which ones cost less, and you'll have a "code free" player for around 100 bucks. As for Sony and Toshiba, they can be re-coded, too, but they've managed to elude hackers so far. P.S. If you're uncomfortable with the concept of "hacking," all you would accomplish by buying a code-free player would be to pay someone extra $ to do what you could have done yourself!
