I don't know how easy it is in the US but here in the UK a friend of mine has just got a new job paying £11k ($22k) more from an on-line agency. The coimpany that hired her saw her CV on-line, contactd her and the rest is history. I've even thought about doing it myself when I finish my middle age gap year.
