I often have dreams that are very scary and real. There seems to be an evil presence in the room and I will sense evil around me. I am unable to move or respond. Often, I will sense someone next to me; I can actually feel their breath on my ear. Often they are speaking in some unknown evil language and it totally freaks me out as I am paralyzed, cannot move or speak. I feel as if they are trying to possess or harm me.
I eventually became able to stop the dreams or whatever they are pretty quickly by saying in my mind "I believe in Jesus Christ" Jesus Christ is triumphant over evil and other similar things.
Am I crazy or is this a sleep disorder?
Anyone else with similar experiences?

This is an actual disorder called sleep paralysis. When you fall asleep, your body naturally releases a brain chemical to limit and inhibit movement. When you wake up, you brain is supposed to stop releasing this chemical. In people with sleep paralysis, the body does not stop releasing this chemical as you wake up, therefore, while you are still in that semisomnus state between sleep and wake, you literally are paralyzed. Most people do hear voices; this is believed to be because the part of you that is waking up is getting panicky from not being able to move, while the part that is still asleep perceives either someone there who could help you or an evil there to harm you. Some things that can trigger sleep paralysis: eating too soon before sleeping (within about hours), being too hot when you sleep, getting too much sleep, or poor sleep position. Sleep therapists often say that when it happens, do not panic, first and foremost, because that will just make it worse. The prayer that you say helps to keep you calm, so that is good. Second, focus on trying to move something small like a toe or finger, or try to talk. If need be, try to fall back asleep to retry waking up.

I myself have sleep paralysis. I often think that I can hear my husband just on the other side of the bedroom door, and if I could only call for him, he would come and wake me up. I am never able to call for him, and he is rarely ever even home when it happens. For me, it happens if I nap for too long during the day, so if I lay down for a nap, I have to make sure to set an alarm.

It is very scary, can hear demonic voices, feel the breath on my face.
You say to try to fall back asleep and retry waking up. No way! I usually have such a difficult time dragging myself out of these, once I do wake up, if I go walk around and come back to bed, I am again enveloped by this eerie feeling and dragged back down into it only to happen again and again and again.

Therefore, on the really bad nights it gets to the point that I am afraid to even go back and lie down because I know it will just keep happening.

I know I don't get too much sleep, I sleep anywhere from 5 to 7 hours a night.

No, I mean while still trying to fight your way out of it, if you can't seem to break out, try falling back asleep instead of fighting to wake up. If you are able to drag yourself out, DO NOT go back to sleep for at least 1-1/2 hours. Sorry about the confusion.

Impossible to drag myself back down into sleep either. However, thanks for responding, at least I know I am not the only one out there that has gone thru this.

The first time i took this it happened when i wasnt evan fully asleep i was sort of drifting off! basically evrything that the disorder describes that happens to you happened! only i felt like i was laying different from the way i was actually positioned. i felt as if i was laying straight with my head cocked back as if i were taking a fit if you can imagine? i heard strange whispers as if someone was actually there whispering in my ear i could feel their breath, when i woke up which was a great struggle, all i can remember is The Rip Woman!!!! was it the Paralysis? or was i being Posessed? if someone could get back to me on this it would be very much apreceated....

It sounds like sleep paralysis, and can be fought as if it is sleep paralysis, but if you are religious enough to believe that you were possibly being possessed, then you should use the defenses of your religion to combat it. For example, if you are Christian, rebuke the Spirit by calling on the name of Jesus Christ, etc. You may also want to consult a clergy person on ways to combat it.

yea i think its sleep paralysis too just couldnt understand were the rip woman came out of? thanks for getting back!!

myLot reputation of 97/100. SomethingGood332 (1339)  4 years ago

Oh, hi, Trance -

Wasn't sure you would check back, so I also sent you a personal message (PM). The rip woman part is most likely just the residual or the beginings of a dream - maybe some subconscious fear of yours that the sleep paralysis brings forward.

What is so bizarre is the only thing that makes it go away is me screaming "I believe in Jesus Christ, he is stronger than you" over and over in my head.
It works and I am thankful for that.
Thanks for responding.

I don't have these kinds of dreams or feelings that you are experiencing but I do have where I can't move. The reason for me is because I am in such a deep sleep it takes me a while to really wake up and then when I do I can move again. I do have some bad dreams now and then but they usually leave me pretty quickly after I wake up totally. But sometimes I remember them too vividly and then they will stay with me all day. I don't like having these kinds of dreams because they sometimes make me very sad and depressed or sometimes even scared. Most of my bad dreams are about things that happened to me when I was young, I had a very abusive alchoholic father, but he is no longer in this world with us. So I just try my best to shake it off.

I know exactly what you mean, I go throught the exact dilema almost every night. Have you found any remedies?

myLot reputation of 95/100. lolalolacherrycola (630)   ranked 767 out of 32,950 in life  4 years ago

The remedy I have found is saying over and over in my head "I believe in Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ will triumph over evil"
May sound strange, but it works every time.
That is what makes me think it really is an evil presence.
