My father died of Alzheimers Disease back in 1995. It was very sad and painful. I wrote a poem about that experience that I would like to share and get feedback on. Here Goes...
Father
As I hold my breath, you struggle to remember my name, face or if you even know me at all.
Behind your dark and shining eyes is a man I never got to know, but love unconditionally.
Too late for apologies, tears or catching up;
The past is gone and lucid moments are not
Memories cease to be for you
and I am
left
alone to ponder.
Only a vision of you, Father yet remains.

Anyone else who has struggled or is struggling with the loss of parent or loved from from Alzheimers Disease?

My grandmother had alzheimers. She passed away November of 2006, so just a little over a year ago. She spent the last 4 or 5 years of her life in a nursing home. It was painful because she couldn't even remember my grandfather or them being married. Before she went in the nursing home there were times she would call my mom or one of her other children and tell them she was scared because there was a strange man there in the house, of course she meant my grandfather.
We actually lost my grandfather to pneumonia about 3 years before my grandmother passed away. I'm glad in a way that he went first because she didn't really understand, and if she had went first he would have just grieved himself to death, because even though she didn't really remember him and the nursing home was almostan hour from where he lived he was at the nursing home every day that she was there until he went in the hospital with pneumonia.
If I can find it, I'll have to post for you to read a poem that my cousin wrote and read at our grandmothers funeral. It was so sweet.

I know. There were times I would go to the nursing home to see my grandmother and I would leave there crying. I think the worst for me was one time I went and I ended up feeding her while I was there. I didn't think I was gonna be able to even finish doing that because I got to thinking when I was little, well any of us really were little she took care of us and now here we were having to do things for her that she did for us as kids.

Hi, That was so sad.But Beautiful, I have a parent also that has fallen prey to this disease. Its my mom. She lives in NY and I don't get to see her often because I live across country. This is a horrible disease. I hate to watch her go through this. I pray about this all the time and pray to give my dad the strength to deal with the struggle of caring for her. Right now she talks to me on the phone but someday she won't know who I am and that as you know will be devasting for me. Pray for strength to get through ea day. I know this is extremly hard on you even though you dad is gone now, I know by your poem you miss him dearly. You sound like a wonderful person.

that was a nice poem. i'm sure your father is catching up with you now. watching over you and trying to learn more new things about you. im pretty sure God showed him those scenes of you taking care of him so he could remember that he had a nice loving daughter like you.
