They ask the students that they should complete their studies first. And they should not waste their time other field than study. Taking part in political activities causes to waste the time of students. Thus the elders prohibit and stop them to take part in active politics. As I understand it.

Political science and politics are completely different cups of tea. Political science is a subject of study in college and politics as we all know, is the last refuge of the scoundrel. So no parent would like to see their children become complete scoundrels, cheat people, go back on their promises and generally waste their youth running after false ambitions. Since politics requires no other talent except some intelligence and gift of the gab, many youth, with stars in their eyes and the lure of quick position, give up their studies and join political parties and try to rise to some office. Many are bumped off, many are shunted to less important places and many are left unemployed and uneducated too. So elders always advice the young not to join politics.
