What Do You Think Of Heathcliff From Wuthering Hieghts?

I am currently reading the book Wuthering Hieghts and when I first started I thought it was going to be this romantic love story and I thought I would love the character of Heathcliff. At first I did like him a lot but then as I got deeper into it I began to dislike him immensely. He is such a heartless physco! Ok, so, Catherine Earnshaw is to blame some. I mean, the guy loved her and they were extremely close. She even knew she loved him. Yet, she married another man and all because she said that she was trying to help Heathcliff have a better life, whaaaa? So, because of this Heathcliff flips out and marries the man's sister, gets her pregnant and one day in a fight, he literlly kicks her when she is pregnant. Not to mention the fact that he only married her because he wants everything her brother owns to be his. He also takes in Catherine's nephew and because Catherine's brother treated him like crap, he makes the boy work as a pauper in the fields and hence treats him like crap. THEN, after his estranged wife leaves him and then dies, he takes in his estranged son (by no fault but his own of course), who he treats him like crap and then uses him to pretty much kidnap Catherine Earnshaw's daughter (Catherine is now dead of course) and forces the two to marry. This is where I am at now in the story. The maid who has raised Catherine's daughter, as well as Catherine and Heathcliff mind you (who is the narrator of the story), is locked in a room because he also kidnapped her pfff, and she doesn't know where the girl is and what's happening to her. All she knows is that she was forced to marry Heathcliff's son and she hasn't seen her since, THAT'S IT! So, with all this being said, I think Heathcliff is a horrible, self center, sadistic excuse for a man. This character has me so aggravted that I can't wait for his downfall and if it doesn't come, I will hate the book too LOL...For those of you who have read the book, what is your opinion on the character of Heathcliff?

I completely agree with you. I was so excited when I started reading it as I had such high expectations -after all it's such a highly rated classic. I was so disappointed though. It's a depressing book full of absolutely horrible people. I don't understand the hype about it!

I tried to read it a couple of weeks ago. What a pathetic character. I did not like Heathcliff at all. Don't know why this is a classic.

Well, don't get me wrong, I think it's a great book but it's so aggravating! If Heathcliff doesn't get what's coming to him, then I will have to say it sux but until then, I will just say it's frustratingly aggravating...

I know you are not supposed to like or identify with Heathcliff, but I always felt kind of sorry for him. The events that lead to him becoming the way he is, is not his fault. I have always enjoyed the book, it counts as one of my favorites. I think it is a sad romantic tale with a dark ending, but sometimes that how life goes.

Well, I was feeling bad for him in the beginning and I would have understood it if he had been a little mean because it would have been hard not to be somewhat bitter because of the way he had been treated by Catherine's brother and some others. However, he did not have to be as horribly mean as he had been. I mean, I think what did it mostly for me was when he kicked his pregnant wife. That was just the icing on the cake for me. It made me so furious!
