I heard someone listening to this artist recently and liked what I heard. The name of the singer is familiar to me, but I've not actually sat down and listened to her before. She sounds like something I'd really appreciate - an individualistic female vocalist with an experimental approach to style and lyrics. Am I right in my supposition?
What I really wanted to ask, for those of you that are fans, is what album would you recommend to a first time listener who wants to get a good sample of what her work is like?

I have a couple of PJ Harvey albums. I have Is This Desire? and Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. Here is her discography:
2007 White Chalk [Bonus Tracks]
2007 White Chalk
2006 Dance Hall at Louse Point
2004 Uh Huh Her
2000 Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea
1998 Is This Desire?
1995 To Bring You My Love
1993 4-Track Demos
1993 Rid of Me
1992 Dry
She's definitely an individual vocalist and I guess you could say experimental. She has a beautiful voice and I've actually seen her live twice. She's fantastic. The first album I got was Is This Desire and I think that's a good starting point. To Bring You My Love would also be a good starting point. Have fun!

Thank you! You certainly answered my question!
I'll definitely look into the two you mentioned first.
