I am confused...is anyone else?  email this discussion to a friend?

I'm all for greener living and saving the planet. I am somewhat confused right now though. All these companies and groups that have sprung up on the internet all seem to be pushing the exact same thing - more products.

If they're operating under the Mary Kay philosophy of "people have to buy soap so why not buy it from us" well that isn't exactly "green" thinking, is it?

If you are at the store and need hand soap, yes it's nice to be able to choose between a toxic, chemical laden brand and a all natural organic one.

I realize that it's all about supply and demand. Only in the case of eco products, it's more about demand, because the supply is definitely there. So the more people buy eco products, the more stores will carry them and the cost of the eco products will go down (hopefully).

And I don't have a problem choosing the eco products at the store when I can find them, I really don't.

I do have a problem with being bombarded with ads from the eco people telling me I need to go buy this picnic basket or that tablecloth simply because it's made from bamboo/organic cotton/recycled materials and it's free trade.

It is fantastic that companies are producing products made from recycled materials. On the other hand, they are simply just putting more product on the shelves. They're not edging any other company or product out, they're simply adding more STUFF.

If I look in my cupboard and see that we're now down to 2 drinking glasses or we have 3 plates instead of 4, then I make a trip to our local antique stores and I pick up drinking glasses or plates there. Yes I could run to Target or one of the Marts and buy a nice new set that has been packaged within an inch of it's life. But it's new. It's an energy hog. Even the stuff that has the eco/green tag on it is an energy hog compared to the stuff sitting at the antique store.

Ever read one of the green site's cleaning articles? They will go on and on about this new product or that magic soap and how they work just as well as your ajax but without the health hazards. These new products though, are expensive and can't be found in every store. A lot of times these new products don't work the way the label says they should. And at the very end of these articles, you'll find a teeny tiny paragraph telling you how to make your own cleaning solutions. Without much information or instruction.

Now if I owned Arm & Hammer or a vinegar company, I'd be waging a major advertising campaign. Yet I haven't seen one single commercial or read one advert.

So I am confused. I thought that being Earth friendly meant using as few products as possible. The eco sites are telling me that to be Earth friendly I have to buy as many of their products as possible.

Are we supposed to be Earth friendly or are we supposed to support the new crop of companies?

I think it is a good idea to go to the antique shops of the flea markets and buy things that would otherwise be tossed aside. I believe in wearing the same old jeans until they're completely worn out (or no longer fit :( I don't think we should just go out and buy more stuff and get rid of our old just because it was made out of recycled material when we purchased it 10 years ago.

Great article!!!

We have to use common sense. I make my own eco friendly cleaning products including soap. It is cheap and good.
I agree, maybe recycle means to reuse products that are already there. I don't buy fabric shopping bags (eco friendly)because I use shopping basket for many years.
Eco friendly also means that we should recycle the proper way and use less products in general.
I limit myself to buy products with less packaging.
I noticed that my recycle products are taking more room than my garbage, still my recycle bin from city is much smaller.
I have hard time to stop junk mail and all advertising papers end up in recycle bin.
It is very good reason to be confused.

Oh what a great topic you've brought up! My recycling products take up more room than the actual garbage does too! I have been trying to deal with the clutter, yet we have this huge garbage can on wheels from the town and this small bin for the recycling. I've been thinking of making a sign that says "RECYCLING" and taping it to the garbage can & putting the garbage bags into the recycling bin!

I am really wanting to grow some plants to use in making my own products. I am also very interested in making my own cleaning products as well. If you have any recipes or book recommendations, I would really appreciate it!

AMEN! I think you hit the nail right on the head. Are we really suppose to believe that BP and the other oil companies have had a change in heart after almost a century of destroying the planet? Does anyone really believe a bird is going to sniff the fumes of GE's new jet engine and grin then say how wonderful it smells? The big companies see ecology as just the latest marketing tool but it's really a bit more than that isn't it? We're talking about the future of humanity! This is a very serious topic. Will our children's children need a gas mask just to step outside? Will our great great grandchildren need to filter every single drop of water before they can have a sip? It's really THAT serious. The people running these companies don't really care, they just want your money right NOW. We only have one planet here, it's not like we can use it up then leave. We're like a bunch of fish in a bowl spending all our time trying to break the filter and we may have succeeded. Now what? We go terraform Mars to make it like Earth then tear it up too?

Yes, I agree with you! And yes, they are already planning on terrorizing the Moon and Mars. Another pet peeve of mine. Why clean up the mess we made when we can just move to another planet? Why spend the money on the mess when we can spend the money on researching other planets? It's disgusting because it's a very immature way to think - and this thought process is coming from people who are running this country.
