Do Some Things We See Creep Us Out For, Seemingly, No Reason?  email this discussion to a friend?

I'm going to give you a couple of examples of what I mean.

In the first case, there might be more of a reason, as it's a sign of destruction. In the second case, it's more mysterious, because nothing's been ripped, smashed, etc.

First case: Does anyone remember oilcloths? They're tablecloths created by layering a mesh area with oil paints to make beautiful and festive tablecloths. The problem is that they're aren't the most sturdy when it comes to maintaining them. That is, if something (plate/cup/saucer/etc.) is hot and/or sticky, it will pull off the oil paint--usually, resulting in a puffy, jagged ring that exposes the mesh part.

I remember as I was growing up that I found those "bad spots" unbearable to view and demanded that we go shop for a new oilcloth whenever that happened.

Here's the second case--nothing really obvious about the object giving me the creeps. Nothing like its being something scary or gross such as a shrunken head or a decapitated cat. Just a household object.

In my case, it was the damper located on the exterior of our fireplace (centered on the bricks right above the opening where the fire was started). It was (to the best of my recollection of it) about the size of an adult thumb, made of brass-coated iron, and had a kind of lollipop shape to it (roundish part with a stick handle).

When I was four or five, that damper began to freak me out to where I wanted it to be covered in some way.

I've written a story about it called Damper Of Damnation that can be read by going here...

http://www.epinions.com/content_4204109956

Have you ever been creeped out by an inanimate object (I've had people tell me about being creeped out by everything from a small doorknob to a building with all things in-between such as chairs, dressers, desks, etc. so this kind of feeling about a particular object isn't unique to me.) and/or know somebody who has been?

I would be interested in reading your stories here and/or hearing opinions of what makes this kind of feeling manifest itself.

One thing you might want to know about me is that I've been sensitive enough to dream about something of which I have no knowledge and, then, have it to come true. Things like dreaming about a Chinese restaurant setting up in the location of a favorite tea room that had been damaged by a fire and, then, having it happen--but that's another subject altogether.

Anyway, thanks, in advance, for giving me your feedback.

Things that creep me out...well, clowns for one, ever since I watched poltergiest clowns have creeped me out...I won't even own one.

Basements creep me out...don't know why but they do. Dolls tend to creep me out too simply b/c I saw a movie when I was about 8 that was an Twilight Zone show that was about a doll that wouldn't die and kept killing ppl.

BTW, I have those kind of dreams too. :)

For some reason, I've noticed that a lot of people are creeped-out by clowns. I've always found them to be warm, fuzzy, funny, and just overall neat.

Of course, I grew up back in the time when they were. I think that there have been several horror movies made where the clown turns out to be a very sinister culprit.

I loved our basement! I just didn't like the railingless, slick steps in our house leading down to it. I'd go up and down them very carefully--or else use the outdoor cellar type staircase to reach the basement.

If I ever bought our old house, I would lay carpet on the basement steps and equip them with sturdy railings--and, if it hasn't been done already, I'd ditch that damper and replace it with a pretty one.

I love The Twilight Zone--still watch old re-runs of it. For some reason, I can't remember the doll one. The sinister doll I know about (though I haven't watched the movie) is the one called Chuckie.

As for dolls, I was a doll person to a T. I had decorative dolls I used to decorate my bedroom as I was growing up (They were international dolls in costume that I kept in their boxes--which had transparent lids--and placed in rows along one wall of my bedroom. Each week at a supermarket called Eavey's, there was a doll of the week that customers got for a cheap price after buying a minimum amount of groceries.), I had nic-nak dolls, and I had the kind you play with (everything from Barbie dolls to baby dolls).

I'm still a doll person, and my sweetie is, too. He has a whole collection of stuffed animals and has bought some for me as presents.

This dreams thing would be a good thing to bring up as a discussion! I'd be interested in hearing about your dreams!

an interesting discussion, very unique, thank you,

I am creeped out by a dirty smelling dish rag left in a sink,

it sticks and it is slimy and I hate picking it up to throw it in the washing machine or through it out.

My son has a happen of not trying out the dish cloths after he uses them and it creeps me out.

YEW! I hear you there! If you leave something like that for too long, it does get this kind of slimy appearance and feel to it that makes you tempted just to leave it there longer--which, of course, makes matters worse! LOL

Let me tell you the WORST thing I've ever found in a sink.

I was in home ec. class, and we prepared a meal in there--which resulted in dirty dishes afterwards.

Several of us were doing different things in kitchen clean-up, and I came across this sink full of dishes soaking and started washing them.

I think there must have been a remote way to close the drain, or, surely, whoever had started the dishes would have noticed what was in the drain trap. But, maybe, not.

All I know is that I kept smelling this rotten smell while I was washing the dishes--and, then, something kinda distasteful-looking started floating to the top.

Was it possible that the sewage system had backed up into the sink?

Anyway, I let everybody know that there was something wrong with the sink, so the teacher and some students came over to find out what on earth I was talking about.

We gingerly removed the dishes and, then, opened the drain.

When the water went out, we found that there was a dead mouse decaying in the drain trap.

We were all going, "YEW!"

This mouse, at some point, must have eaten some D-Con and ended up jumping into that particular sink and dying. Since D-Con would make it feel thirsty, it was probably going towards a water source.

No telling how long we had been going into that classroom day after day without realizing that there was a mouse rotting away in that sink!

Nothing really creeps me out except for scary or evil people, really.

Even scary, evil people when kept at bay somehow lose some of their scariness.

It's when people like that get placed in positions of authority that it really becomes scary with one example being those so-called rehabilitation places for kids.
