Pop in Country  email this discussion to a friend?

There was a time when it appeared that country music was going to return to its roots and become traditional once again. The mid to late 80's brought superstar upon superstar answering the call of fans hungering for simple, pure, well written melodies and songs.

It is sad to see the industry turning 'pop' once again. Kenny Chesney has abandoned his once traditional tunes. Rascal Flatts is destroying the industry while making school girls swoon over their beltings.

Where are the modern day Merle's? Who is going to carry the mantle of Hank Williams and the other greats? In the immortal words of George Jones...

...who's going to fill their shoes?

We still have Alan Jackson, he is still ture to his ruts! Toby Keith, comes and goes ( which I really like his music)I offen ask myself the same question. I do not think that Country has went pop I just think they are doing what they are doing because of it being what people are wanting. But I still buy the old music. The Real Music. Like Alabama Best Group ever.. No groups like that these days. That was real Country Music.

I almost cried the year Toby Keith won Male Vocalist of the Year. I mean was he really the best male voice in country?

As far as giving the people what they want....that's exactly the point...

...there was a time when the music was put out there because it was great music and the people came to it...not the other way around.

O yes' Love his music.. He is so different, he does not cling to the same old .. beat, or story line when he is sanging. Toby has got so much talent. ( that I am jealous),lol, No he will be another one that will go in history as a true Country artist!

honestly, if it weren't for pop country, i wouldn't even listen! i'm sure many more feel this way, and that's y most country music artists become pop. they have to go with what the audience likes, it pays the bills

I couldn't disagree more. Country music has never been built on 'conformatism'. If that were the case, how would you explain the careers of Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, George Strait, and others.

In other words, those bringing pop into their music are only catering to a short term 'fix'. That sort of caving only leads to the elimination of the genre...

Yes indeed, Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes! I agree with you that Country music has basically gone pop and some female artist put it just right with the song 'I'm Here For The Money'. Some supposed 'Country' music today does not even qualify for the genre in my book. Taylor Swift is a good example, it just ain't Country! I have a Country band and we play a good deal of classic country and we have a number of places where we play that just love the music. We have been told by other venues however that they can't hire us because we are "TO COUNTRY"! In those places, if you don't play all modern country, you just don't get booked. We can (and do) do some of the newer country songs and we could do more and get more bookings but I just can't make myself go there because I'm NOT just there for the money. I love good country music, regardless of who performs it.
