Baby Einstein DVDs - do you think they work?

I am not talking about any study done, just based on personal observance. When my son was little, these tape were just coming out so I did not get to use them. He watched Sesame Street, Blues Clues, etc. and we always provided him with a learning environment. My brother made my nephew live eat and breathe those tapes when he was little. To me, he does not know anymore than any other child his age who did not use the tapes. What do you think, do Baby Einstein DVDs work?

I don't know whether these DVDs can work or not, but I think they are still somewhat beneficial for children. Perhaps children are too little to understand them, but at least they are good and healthy material. It's better than some violent cartoons.

I think that they work in the way of keeping your kid busy instead of paying attention to them and teaching them yourself!! lol. Not to be rude to your brother, but its not good for them to just sit and watch the flashing lights and thing go by on the screen all day without much human interaction. My friends kid watches the aby einstein movies a lot more then my kid, but she only gets to watch them in the car. I let mine watch the baby signs on say once a month, but then i work with her on the signs and the words throughout each day. Too much tv is bad, and i think it hurts them more then it helps them, no matter what it is.

I grew up watching Sesame Street and learned alot from it. I've never heard of Baby Einstein movies but I think when parents go overboard with trying to make their chid a "smart kid" they take the fun out letting them be kids. !!HAPPY ST. The age they are meant to target, under 2, in my opinion is just too young for watching television. I think if it's on as back round noise while the child is playing, that's fine. But sitting down, watching tv for even just an hour seems like an hour that could have been spent on something more stimulating or more educational.

I agree with the TV age. Anyone under 2 is much too young to sit an focus on TV. Do you think a child that is closer to 2, or a bit over would benefit from the DVDs. I know that there is a series for preschool age children as well.

I think they could do some good if the parent is there with the child and interacting with him/her. The interaction is what is most important. I don't believe a parent should just leave their child sitting in front of the TV all day. Thats what harms a child. If the child gets excitement out of the DVD and the interaction, then I think it is just fine. But like anything else you can overdo it.

I agree. Too much TV time or lack of interaction is not good. I am not sure the DVDs really do much for kids, even if you limit them though. I believe children do much better with learning things from parents or teacher rather than DVDs or TV.

I think they can help, but only if the parent/caregiver watches with them and helps them learn. Children under 2 aren't actually supposed to watch TV at all. I think it all depends on parental involvement though.

That is true parental involvement is important. With my nephew they used the DVDs as more of a distraction than anything else. When my son was little, he was 2 - maybe older - before we started to let him watch TV. Even then he didn't get much TV time.

I think reading with your child has been shown to have a much bigger impact.
