I came across an interesting article a while ago on a Jewish website saying that tithing was a sin. At first I thought that it was ludicrous, but after reading the article I realized they had a point. I couldn't find the exact article, but I found one that was very similar.

Here are seven interesting points taken from http://bible-truths.com/tithing.html;;
1.) Abraham never tithed from his own personal property or livestock
2.) Jacob wouldn't tithe until God blessed him first
3.) Only Levite priests could collect tithes; there are no levite priests anymore.
4.) Only food products from the land were tithable
5.) Money was never a tithable commodity
6.) Christian converts were never asked to tithe anything to the Church
7.) Tithing first appears centuries after completion of the Bible

There are many interesting points in this article including the following;

1.) Only landowners tithed
2.) Only Products of the land were tithed
3.) Only Levites could receive the tithe
4.) Tithing was a law of Moses
5.) Christians are not under the law of Moses.

According to the author of the article, most pastors know that tithing is no longer required but do not want to tell the congregation this due to the fear of church bills going unpaid. The author also lists that giving is a matter of the heart and lists verses that support giving to the church in gifts of love, not in a matter of mandatory tithing.

What do you think about this?

I think that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. I do think that a person should donate money if they have it when they go to church because those funds do help a needy family. I know this because there is a family in my community, the woman got real sick with cancer (she's doing much better now) and couldn't work and the man worked endless hours which still didn't make ends meet. They couldn't afford their electric bill back in October and they were worried about it and getting their children taken away. The church took up the funding to pay the bill for them which was done successfully. Then again in December the church helped them out with Christmas dinner and gifts for the children since they knew the family was going through such a hard time. So I do believe in donating money. I do not believe in being asked to donate a certain amount as there are some people who cannot afford it and therefore a person should donate only what they can afford and also I believe it should come from the heart. I know that there are those who don't believe in it and I'm not saying that they are wrong either. It is their own personal choice.

I didn't say that I believed that giving to the church or to needy families was wrong, I said that many pastors know that 'tithing' is a sin. Tithing is not the same thing as giving to needy families. Tithing is what most pastors make out to be as 10% of your annual income that is supposedly supposed to go to the church, otherwise you are "stealing money from God".
Giving to families in need is something that the church SHOULD take care of, it's a difficult thing when you go through something as traumatic as cancer and have no one to support you even when you are working as hard as you possibly can.

Giving cheerfully ends up being a huge blessing, when you bless others you are blessed.

Oh, I know you didn't say it was wrong. I was just saying that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. Because there are those who think it is a sin and those that don't. That's all. Wasn't saying you personally said it was wrong. Sorry if I made it sound like that. Have a good day.:-)

Tithing is not a sin, the Bible talks about how we need to tithe, not just in the law of Moses. In the new testament it talks of giving ten percent of time, money, and possessions, I forget where though.
