Getting the Needle! |
| |
| Ok I have been very remiss and not starting any discussions for the last few weeks! The reason is simple I had a very busy week last week and was extremely tired, then I had fallen behind in answering my friends discussions so i wanted to catch up on that before I started any of my own! As most of you know I have chronic back problems despite back surgery almost a year ago! Last Monday I had a Therapeutic Lumbar Epidural and steroid injection . In my naivety I went along to hospital expecting to have the procedure done and go home! Because I was numb from the chest down it was well after 8 at night before I was allowed home, after the feeling in my legs returned! I will say now that I was pain free for the first time in 2 years and if that is the only relief I can ever get it was well worth while! The pain has been building up day by day but is still an improvement on what it was before! Last Friday I had my first Acupuncture appointment in hospital, the needles were only left in 10 minutes then but today and for the appointments every Friday morning they will be left in for at least 20 minutes, the theory is that the acupuncture needles will stop the pain messages from my leg and back travelling to my brain! They reckon it will take 4 sessions before I feel the benefit. I have also started seeing a specialist physiotherapist although I am allowed to do 2 tiny exercises it is minimal and I am not allowed to overdo it even if I have a good day! So after 8 months of pain, misery and despair I am getting lots of help from the Pain Clinic and my Dr who is one of the anesthetists in charge! I told my Dr today that if I got no more pain relief than those few painfree days It would be worthwhile and she has assured me that although I may never get rid of the pain they are sure they will get me more relief and that they have plenty more tricks up their sleeve! My questions to you is have you ever had an epidural as a pain management treatment, have you ever had acupunture and was it effective and have you ever been involved in a pain management clinic? xxx | | | | | |

| | I have never had an epidural but it sounds like it has helped you at least a little bit. It is good that you found a good place to get pain management. Hopefully things will start going better for you. Here is to many pain-free days!!! | | | | | | |

| | No I've never had any of this done that you are going thru. BUT I would love to have acupuncture for weight loss, & to get rid of my sweet tooth!! Does it hurt at all when they put the needles in? & if it does, does it hurt the whole time the needle is in you,? Or just when it is first put in..Thanks..Lori | | | | | | |

| | I have heard of acupuncture being used to stop smoking and to suppress the appetite and I guess it is done in a similar way! Usually it isn't at all painful and is really very relaxing! Honestly people think it is really painful but the needles are usually very fine and do not hurt at all. today I was jumping about 3ft in the air every time a needle went in and I was very puzzled as it wasn't painful - my doctor explained though that when the body is in so much pain it reacts to the littlest thing. I would try it if you think it will help as it really doesn't hurt sweety! xxxx | | | |

| | My answer is yes and no.. lol. I had a spinal when i had my last c section.. I can't say as that was fun at all.. It is a REALLY weird feeling not being able to move your legs isn't it ? I was trying and trying and i couldnt even wiggle my toes. I am getting this done in a nother 6 days.. oh joyous occassion! I am glad that you are getting the help you need to manage your pain! It really sucks to be in pain, i have been in pain the last couple months myself, but i can't imagine to be in pain as long as you have.. What exactly caused your pain or would you rather not share that with the public ? (I may have asked already but i have a crappy memory!!) | | | | | | |

| | I agree it is a really weird feeling! i had to lie on my side to make sure it 'spread' properly and when I was finally allowed to lie on my back I was convinced one buttock was a LOT bigger than the other - I had to feel with my hand to make sure both sides were on the bed - honest! lol I had an epidural when I was in labour with my youngest but it didn't work , not sure whether it wwasn't administered properly or just not done properly so it was a bit of a shock to get that feeling this time! lol I can't believe it is only 6 days til we get a baby sissy! I don't mind sharing sweets but we aren't too sure what happened but it was a year from onset til my surgery and the nerves were badly damaged too! I guess I am just unlucky - the consultant told me it was like 2 neighbours getting the same washing machine at the same time and using it the very same , one may break down and the other will work for many years - my back broke down and all they can do is try to fix it! Hugs sweety xxx | | | |

| | Oh, how good it is to hear that they are helping to ease your pain, at last ((((Huggggs)))). I've never had an epidural, but when I had such pain in my hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders, I had acupuncture for quite a while. He gave me two series back to back, in fact. I think I had three weeks break in between. Mind you... it did the trick. I can actually pick up a pint of beer with one hand now, instead of having to use two. I think that was about seven or eight years ago, and I very rarely get any pain at all now, so I have hopes that you might get rid of almost all of yours, if not all my friend. Brightest Blessings. xxxxx | | | | | | |

| | That is an amazing result from your acupuncture sweetheart - really impressive and I am glad it worked so well for you! I hope my results are half as good as yours have been! One of the things she is thinking of for further down the line is electrical acupuncture (can't remember the right name) it is kind of like tens and acupuncture together and is meant to really tingle! If I ever get it I will let you know all about it! Thank you for being as wonderfully supportive as always Darkwing my dear friend and hugs straight back to you! xxxxx | | | |

| | Had my session of regular acupuncture today sweety - I ended up in severe pain at one point yesterday, I mean really dreadful and the doctor could tell when she was putting the needles in! How amazing is that? It was actually really quite painful today for some reason but still left me relaxed which was good as we went to our favourite poundland shop afterwards! Weemam and her hubby took us, they even looked after the kids when I was getting my acupuncture - how lucky am I to have such wonderful friends? xxx | | | |

| | I have never had an epidural MO, and hope to never have one. I am having acupunture, I have only had three sessions so far so it is too early to tell if it is going to work for me or not. One of my doctors actually does it, so he knows my health problems and is trying different needles and different points each time I go. Because of my health problems there are a few neddles and points he cannot use. I wish I had have gone sooner, but was always sceptical of acupunture. I would now advise anyone to try it before going along with surgery or medication. | | | | | | |

| | Sweety I so hope that it helps you - I was thinking of you when I wrote this post! I think one of the first times I met you was on your post about acupunture! The doctor who is doing mine is in charge of all my pain management and the same one who managed to get me my mri so quickly! She is very good at her job and so approachable and easy to speak to! She also has 4 kids aged from 11-4, when I said to her it must be difficult to work full time and have 4 young children she asked why I thought she was at work! lol See she even ahs the same sense of humour (or should that read honesty) as me. I was blessed the day I was referred to her pain clinic I can tell you! We will have to compare notes about any effects we get from the neddling! lol xxx | | | |
