hi mylotters-since i was young i have had epilepsy, when young it was in a major form and very often a week i would have a seizure.
In my teens it started to get more under control through aed's (anti-epileptic drugs). Obviously on leaving school i had to get work to pay for rent to my mum like norml teenagers-cutting a long story short I could never get a permenanant job because of my epilepsy so had to resort to just temping-
my question is why even nowadays do employers not like taking on people like myself for work when we are capable of doing what we applied for?
why do employers hesitate straight away when faced with the fact someone may have epilepsy and not take them on?
Even the green card we now carry around with us saying we can work is of no help...there must be someone out there who could give me an answer...please share

Hi littleowl, that would be really tough having epilepsy, now I understand why you said in previous discussions that you don't drive. That is ridiculous how employers are not taking on people just because they have epilepsy, you are quite capable of doing just as good of a job as the next person if not better.
Have you ever thought of starting your own business littleowl? Maybe that could help you? Not sure if you have mentioned to me, but what kind of work are you doing? Or maybe you can start at home business in some kind of spiritual work as you seem passionate about that. I think do something that you are passionate about and you shall succeed immensely. Also maybe you are interested in reiki business, that might be something that interests you.

Forgot to answer your question after all that, I have not had trouble finding work in my field, teaching. However I only seem to get contract work, difficult to get permenent work, which makes it difficult as every christmas break (6 weeks) I don't get paid each year.

I can't give you any answers Littleowl, but it does seem these days that employers have become so selective because so many people out there are looking for jobs. It took my own daughter over five months of intensive searching to finally get employed and she has no health problems at all but she is young. I think they do discriminate without realising against health, age, young and old etc. Perhaps it frightens them as they have no understanding of it. I am sorry to hear that you are a sufferer but at least it is under control with aeds. I hope someone does respond who can give the answer. So all you employers out there on myLot do you discriminate without realising against conditions such as epilepsy and why? Ellie :D

hi ellie-you are right about employers dicriminating about all sorts, one especially apart from epilepsy etc-age is the other thing that employers seem to be against as soon as you hit 35yrs old it seems as if you are too old t be employed now-i hope your daughter does find a job soon-blessings littleowl

Hi Littleowl, I am so sorry that the timing wasn't quite right for us to meet last week as I think we would probably have so much to say, but the time will come. I want to say a big big thank you for the BR. I really do appreciate it more than you probably realise right now. Ellie :D

Hi,Littleowl, yes, I have had trouble getting work, well I haven't worked in 3 years, I don't seem to get along with people at work, but I sure get along with people on the internet, I like dealing with people and talking to people, but on a Job my Jobs just don't work out, If I had me enough money I would go into bussieness for myself.

One of my friend has the same problem, she doesn't have epilepsy, but she's got a problem with her liver. I don't the terms in medicine, but this kind of disease will not actually infect others until through blood or salivia. But employers reject this kind of employees, most of employee will eat in the company canteen, so they think it's not fair for others, then refuse to enroll, regardless of her ability. I can do nothing but feel sorry for her. I was once good at persuading others to be optimistic, but this time i lose confidence. I don't know when this situation will end, she has further started her studies in the university, i still wonder her way out when she's graduate. Will a Master's degree count? I doubt very much. Things have to change, i think

Hi Lynette-my feeleings go out to your friend, it must be hard for her, thing is people fin it so hard to accept illnesses they know nothing about and hen applying for a job they have a 'budget' they have to keep to and if they employ someone disabled or like your friends illness it puts the companies insurance sky high, plus they tend to think you may be off work a lot-there is a possibility your friend will get a job doing a Master's degree but it depends what the degree is-it is and always will be swings and roundabouts-sorry for not being able to give any better news-I wish your friend all the best though-blessings littleowl
