an overweight dog or cat is not healthy nor more than humans are.
Dogs need exercise just whether they are a puppy or an old dog.
here are 5 important exercises for them.
1- make sure when your dog is exercising that the temperature is right, don't try to overwork him in intense heat. Make sure he has plenty of water when you turn from his run, or his walk, or his playtime.
2- Start you dog out slowly in the early spring, dogs are not accustomed to the heat after a long winter, and they can actually get heat stroke.
3- It is best to exercise your dog in the early morning or the evening after the sun goes down, to avoid temperatures of 80 degrees and more and humidity of over 30 percent, this is especially true for older dogs with heart of lung problems, but is a rule for all dogs.
4 - Any kind of exercise for dogs is better than none at all, it could be playing frisbee or talking a walk, doesn't matter as long as they get some.
5 - What your dog's weight, exercise him and keep him healthy you can even get some weight charts at PetFit.com

These are really great tips. I think I am doing good, because I usually let my dog out during the afternoon, when the sun is not high up. I can't let her out in the evenings. I usually bring her to the park and we let her chase us or do fetch.

Good tips there. As for my dog I don't really have to worry about him getting over weight. He was born to run and play. We have an Italian Greyhound and they love to run. He has toys that he loves for you to throw and him fetch, he is getting good too at catching his frisbee.
