Shows Changing Networks email this discussion to a friend?

How do you feel when a show moves to another network? It looks like quite a few shows are changing this year. CW has already lost wrestling one of their highest rated shows. NBC won't have Scrubs next season. Now Project Runway on bravo wants to move to a bigger network and certainly can't blame them more viewers means more money.

All three of these shows could end up in a better situation. CW is the network that is in danger of being shut down, NBC is in 4th place and most of my friends don't have the network Bravo, so have never seen Project Runway.

Do you watch the show when it changes networks? Is there any show you would stop watching because of a network change?

I wish they would somehow send email updates when things change, it can get really confusing unless you have Tivo or something...

I actually have. I followed the dumbest soap ever, Passions, to DirecTV when they changed over. I don't know why they did it. Now that they are on DirecTV exclusively, they only have new episodes three days out of the week, and a replay of the whole week on Thursday. I don't see how its getting more viewers here, unless DirecTV is really booming like that.

Luckily we already had the service when they announced this change, now at least I am satisfying some of my addiction to this crazy soap, if not all.

I have bad news for you, as DirecTV has canceled Passions. There will be episodes shown through the summer of 2008. It certainly is a crazy soap, as I use to watch it. Thanks for the reply.

Sorry I'm not kidding, as its on several of the cast members web sites. Filming was completed in March. I was hoping the show would get better ratings.

Shows usually change networks for one of two reasons.

1) So they don't get cancelled: A lot of the shows that change networks are shows that are being canceled by their current network. For one reason or another (and often grassroots fan campaigns) made the difference to generate enough interest for another network to pick up the show. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a great example of this. Fox canceled the show, and the fledging CW picked it up largely due public outcry from the fans.

2) Getting a better deal: Some shows change networks because they are getting more popular and have strong enough appeal to move to another network for a better deal. This can be a good thing as more money does usually make things better, and it helps the shows longevity.

The times are changing now though, since so many cable networks are now affiliates of and owned by other larger networks. Bravo I believe is affiliated with NBC, which explains shows moving from Bravo to NBC when they have a lot of success. This is just one example of many.

A word on sporting events: Basketball, Baseball, Football, yes even wrestling, sign contracts with specific networks to broadcast their sporting events. When the contracts expire, the sporting league in question shops around for a better deal from other networks. This is normal, and I doubt it will ever change.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran on WB 1997 to 2001 and then UPN 2001 to 2003. I'm a big fan of the show and never missed an episode. I felt UPN should have worked harder to keep their main star, as fans loved the show and were watching it. If the show had been on FOX Network, I am certain its ratings would have been higher.

The second reason you listed more popular applies to Project Runway, as Bravo wasn't airing new episodes often. Bravo is affiliated with NBC and so is USA Network. This wouldn't be a big deal, if Project Runway was moving to USA. The network mentioned is Lifetime not owned by NBC. I will be watching the news to see if the law suit has any merit.

Your completely correct about sports and its an interesting business and I do enjoy seeing who ends up winning the new contract. I really enjoyed Contract Law in college.

Thank you for posting and I really enjoyed the post. I find the behind the scenes of television to be quite interesting.

Scrubs is owned by ABC and they want their show back, as NBC wanted to leave the show with an ending only on DVD. Fans of the show deserve a real ending that is aired on television.

I would follow my favorite show to another network. But I would leave if they change the show too much.

I wasn't happy with the Passions move either. Its the only afternoon soap I was taping, but I knew it was in ratings trouble and likely to get canceled. Sadly, it was canceled again. Thanks for the reply.

It doesn't really bother me at all, I never care what station I am viewing I care only about the show I want to see.

This is probably a simplistic view, but I see it in a sort of out of date way: Network television, to me, is the major networks NBC, ABC, FOX and CBS. Everything else is "cable TV" (whether cable or satellite). I figure if it is moving to one of the major networks, it is moving up in the world. lol If it is moving to "cable TV" then it is either only to satisfy a remnant of fans that is too small to be deemed important to the 'big boys', or it is reruns and not new episodes that is for people who either love the show so much they will watch reruns over and over (up for another Law & Order marathon anyone?) or don't get the major networks (many satellite subscribers don't) and couldn't watch it before.

I don't get into watching weekly shows on a regular basis...except for American Idol, most shows I can take 'em or leave 'em. So, if American Idol were to change networks, yes, I would follow it to the new network. And, if they didn't change it (for the worse)...I would continue to watch it there.

So, all that to say I don't much care what channel a show is on. lol

myLot reputation of 99/100. Fishmomma (3208)   ranked 17 out of 3,363 in watching television  4 months ago

Actually, Law & Order makes a lot of money for the cable channels. Also some of the cable shows do win the night beating what you have listed as the major networks. CW is owned by CBS and if CBS wanted it to be successful, then it could be down the road. FOX had a hard time when it was a new network not that many years ago. The problem for CW is they need to figure out what works and stick to it. They have dumped their comedy department and I do think that was a smart move.

American Idol isn't going to change channels. FOX can't afford to lose their cash cow, as FOX would again be a struggling network year round. The only huge hit in the Fall is House, which explains why they don't win the ratings at that time.

Thanks for the reply.

LOL! Like I said...a simplistic view. wink I am sure Idol won't go to another network, but since it's the only show I "can't live without" (haha) it's the only one I could relate to the question. Have a good day! thumbup

I really don't mind, and will follow a show over. Its just when nobody tells you they are moving that really throws me off. I already know about Scrubs moving, and I will definitely follow them over to ABC. Or at least I think they are going to ABC ( I should check that). I would stop watching any show that moves over to a network I don't have. I wouldn't buy the network just for the show.

Scrubs will be on ABC. I'm looking forward to watching it. Thanks for the reply.
